Set during the Allied invasion of the island of Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater during WWII, this film is based on the novel by James Jones. Keir Dullea is Private Doll, who dreads the invasion and steals a pistol to help him protect himself. Sergeant Welsh (Jack Warden), a caustic, battle-scarred veteran, hates Doll, whom he considers a coward. In battle, Doll kills a Japanese soldier and is filled with remorse, which further angers the sergeant. 1937년 남부 뉴올리언즈 주립정신 병원의 뇌 외과의사 쿠크로비츠 박사(몽고메리 클리프트)는 병원의 어려운 재정 때문에 모든 걸 포기하고 고향 시카고로 돌아가려고 하는데 그 동네의 부유한 미망인 베너블 부인(캐서린 헵번)은 자기 조카 캐서린(엘리자베스 테일러)에게 뇌수술을 해주는 조건으로 병원을 위해 막대한 돈을 기부할 것임을 제안한다. 식충식물을 좋아하는 베너블 부인에게는 세바스찬 이라고 하는 아들이 있었는데 지난 여름 아들과 조카 캐서린이 동행하여 여행을 떠나 그 여행에서 아들이 목숨을 잃었다. 한편 조카 캐서린은 사건 이후 정신이상 증세를 보여 아들의 죽음이 조카 캐서린의 정신이상 증세와 관련이 있지 않나 의심하며 한편으로는 아들이 동성애자였다는 사실이 밝혀질까 불안 해하며 쿠크로비츠 박사에게 빨리 뇌수술을 해 주기를 원한다. 쿠크로비츠 박사는 성 메리병원에 입원하고 있는 캐서린을 만나지만 그녀의 정신상태에 대해 진단해 본 결과 이상한 징후는 확인되지 않으나 캐서린이 굳게 입을 다물고 있고 세바스찬이 죽은 원인이 많은 영향을 주었다고 관찰되어 그녀를 주립병원으로 옮겨 기억을 되돌려 지난 여름 갑자기 세바스찬의 죽음에 대한 진상을 추적하기 위한 치료를 최상의 방법으로 대화를 계속하는데.

Dutch painter Jan-Van Rooyer hurries to keep a rendezvous with Jacqueline Cousteau, an elegant, sophisticated Frenchwoman, slightly his elder, whose relationship with him had turned from art student into one of love trysts. He arrives and is confronted by Detective Police Inspector Morgan who accuses him of having murdered Jacqueline. Morgan listens sceptically to the dazed denials of Van Rooyer as he tells the story of his relationship with the murdered woman. Morgan, after hearing the story, realizes that the mystery has deepened, and it becomes more complicated when the Assistant Commissioner, Sir Brian Lewis, explains that Jacqueline was not married but was being kept by Sir Howard Fenton, a high-ranking diplomat whose names must be kept out of the case.
