성실하고 순진한 가장인 쳇(존 캔디 분)은 가족을 데리고 호숫가로 나와 휴가를 즐긴다. 허풍이 세고 약간 사기성이 있는 아랫 동서 로먼(댄 애크로이드 분)이 가족들을 데리고 예기치 않게 쳇이 있는 곳으로 찾아온다. 둘은 만나기만 하면 티격태격 싸운다. 로먼은 자신의 경제적 파산을 숨기고 쳇의 순진한 마음을 이용하여 거액의 수표를 우려내지만 양심의 가책을 받아 수표를 찢어버리고 자신의 음모를 털어놓는다.

미국 알래스카, 스톤헤이븐 중범 형무소(Stonehaven Maximum Security Prison). 탈옥수 매니와 버크는 천신만고 끝에 달리는 기차안에 올라타게 된다. 그러나 불행히도 그들이 탄 기차의 기관사가 갑자기 심장마비로 죽는다. 기차는 고삐 플린 망아지처럼 폭주하고 사태의 심각성을 알게된 철도회사에서는 다른 기차와의 충돌의 피하기 위해 노심초사하나 달리 해결할 방법이 없어 애만 태운다. 뒤늦게 기차안에 사람이 타고있는 사실을 알게 된 철도회사는 한가닥 희망을 걸고 기차를 정지시키려고 한다. 한편 탈옥수를 잡으로 온교도소장이 헬기에서 사다리를 타고 기차로 내려온다.

Dr. Roger Girard is a rich scientist conducting experiments on head transplantation. His caretaker has a son, Danny, who, although fully grown, has the mind of child. One day an escaped psycho-killer invades Girard's home, killing Danny's father before being gunned down himself. With the maniac dying and Danny deeply unsettled by his father's death, Dr. Girard decides to take the final step and transplant the killer's head onto Danny's body.
