Claustrophobic train-set comedy-thriller (produced by H.G. Wells son) with an ace reporter coming up against crooks intent on stealing a gold shipment on the Scotland to London express. A scatterbrained scientist, a gun-toting dame with revenge on her mind and a pair of eccentric spinster crime novelists – who steal the film – round out the motley band of passengers who cross the path of our intrepid hero as he tries to get his big scoop.

This documentary starts with the theory as proposed by John Dalton in 1808, and outlines the progress made during the nineteenth century bringing in Faraday's early experiments in electrolysis, Mendeleeff's Periodic Table, and ending with ideas of the size of molecules and atoms then current. In 1620s France, dreaded swordsman Gil de Berault returns from carrying out a mission for Cardinal Richelieu, and finds the Cardinal worried about growing opposition from the Huguenots in the south. The Cardinal also warns de Berault that dueling has been outlawed, and will henceforth be punishable by death. Gil, however, promptly disobeys the law and is indeed sentenced to death. The Cardinal offers to cancel the sentence if de Berault is able to capture the duke who is organizing plans for an uprising. Gil travels to the duke's castle and is allowed to stay as a guest, but the duke's wife and sister immediately suspect that he is a spy. He and his servant still make good progress, until he falls in love with the duke's sister, which complicates everything.

H.G.웰즈의 원작을 영상으로 재구성한 솜씨가 매우 뛰어난 작품이다.이 영화의 줄거리는 제작 시점에서 몇 년 앞인 1940년 제2차 세계대전이 발발하는 것에서부터 시작한다. 그 뒤엔 1970년대의 어느 황폐한 마을의 모습이 등장과 함께 그 마을에서 벌어지는 권력투쟁이 묘사된다. 다시 장면이 바뀌어 서기 2036년, 앞에서 등장했던 마을이 평화롭고 풍요롭고 과학기술이 발달된 유토피아로 탈바꿈하여 나타난다. 그러나 그들은 통치자의 오만함과 사람들의 상상력 결핍이라는 문제를 안고 있는데...마지막 장면에서 한 쌍의 젊은 남녀가 좀 더 희망적인 사회를 건설하리라는 사람들의 기대를 안고 우주로 떠난다는 결말을 보여준다.

The commoner is a happy cockney plumber by the name of Bert Gibbs. Bert comes into contact with the celebrated Russian movie star Ilya Myona. Desperate for publicity and aware that nobility make for good copy, Ilya persuades Bert to pose as her fiancé (with the possibility of persuading him to go through with the marriage if need be). Things are complicated by a pair of anarchic Bolsheviks, one of whom has a daughter named Lenina who knows Bert from his plumber days and is quite in love with him.
