In a police station in a small village, a sergeant interrogates a young and frightened postman, known as "Cacasotto". He, normally known for being calm and good-hearted, was arrested for having threatened a policeman on patrol with a knife. Eventually, Cacasotto begins to speak with the cop. And he tells what happened twenty years earlier to him and to his five best friends: Gianluca, Walter, Peppino, Margherita and his little brother, Andrea.

An international incident threatens to break out a war between major European powers that only an unlikely couple of bickering lovers seems able to stop.

언뜻 대조적으로 보이는 두 가족의 이야기를 통해 현대 이탈리아 사회를 풍자하는 코미디. 파보네 가족과 비스마라 가족은 같은 로마에 살고 있지만 매우 다른 삶을 살고 있다. 파보네 가족은 소위 ‘지식인’으로서 부유한 삶을 누리고 있고, 노동자 계급인 비스마라 가족은 극우에 가까운 정치적 입장을 갖고 있다. 그러던 어느 날 작은 계기로 두 가족이 엮이게 되며 이들이 숨기고 있던 각자의 비밀이 드러나기 시작한다.

Salvo was five when his father Vincenzo was arrested, practically before his eyes. Seven years later Salvo lives with his uncles and his cousin a controlled and peaceful existence in the Turin area, but his father returns and claims his son for four days. Vincenzo has to carry an important load to Bari and brings Salvo (nomen est omen) with him as insurance: a child is better than a gun, he says, because his presence in the event of a possible police detention can have a distracting effect . This however is not the only reason why Vincenzo wants Salvo with him, and the "Salv-atore" child will prove to be a potential vehicle of redemption for that messed up father, but not entirely devoid of feelings and attentions.

서정적인 선율 속에서 뛰어다니는 세 남매를 보여주며 시작되는 이 영화는 19세기 이탈리아의 대표적인 낭만주의 시인 자코모 레오파르디의 삶을 소재로 한다. 엄격한 아버지의 교육 현장을 반영하는 초반부는 시대상을그대로 재현한 그림 같은 샷들로 구성되며, 전체적으로 19세기의 텍스처를 그대로 살린 실내 조명과 색감은 숭고미를 자아낼 정도로 감동적이다. 구속된 삶을 살았던 고향 레카나티에서부터 실연을 겪는 피렌체, 마지막 거처였던 나폴리에 이르기까지 실제 시인의 여정을 따라가다 보면 신체적 결함으로 인해 사랑과 동시에 죽음을 떠올려야만 했던 그의 시 세계에 한 발짝 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있다. 레오파르디 역의 엘리오 제르마노의 연기는 그야말로 타의 추종을 불허하며, 시를 읊으며 대단원을 장식하는 마지막 샷은 형언하기 힘든 감동을 준다. 모든 도서관 장면들은 실제 레오파르디가 작업했던 곳에서 촬영되었다고 한다. 영화는 줄리오 안드레오티의 삶을 연대기 순으로 그리거나 각 사건들을 친절하게 설명하지 않는다. 대신 주요 사건들을 간략하게 묘사하고 안드레오티의 모호한 행동들을 더 자세하게 보여주며 그의 복잡한 내면을 포착하려 한다. 영화의 시작과 함께 1978년 좌파혁명단체인 붉은 여단이 이탈리아의 전 총리 알도 모로를 납치해 몸값을 요구했다가 당시 총리였던 줄리오 안드레오티가 이를 거부하자 알도 모로를 살해했다는 정보가 자막으로 등장한다. 그리고 영화는 다음 장면에서 구체적인 맥락을 알려주지 않은 채 암살로 사망하는 사람들을 연속적으로 보여주며 안드레오티의 정치 인생이 피로 얼룩져 있음을 보여준다. 줄리오 안드레오티는 총리와 장관을 여러 번 거친 거물 정치인이다. 그는 정치적 동료들과 함께 작은 방에 모여 앉아 항상 누가 누구의 편인지 대화를 나누며 자신의 정치 권력을 공고히 한다. 그 와중에 안드레오티의 심기를 거스른 것으로 보이는 사람들은 계속해서 암살을 당한다. 한편 검찰은 안드레오티와 마피아의 연관을 본격적으로 조사하기 시작한다. 즉 안드레오티가 정치적 반대편을 제거하기 위해 마피아와 손을 잡고 암살을 사주해왔다는 것이다. 결국 각각 다른 혐의로 재판들이 열리지만 그는 모든 혐의를 부인하고 증거 부족으로 재판들은 하나둘씩 기각된다.
