예술가 메건은 이탈리아인 남편 레오와 함께 아일랜드에 산다. 리오의 삼촌 도메니코가 사망하면서 집을 리오에게 유산으로 남기고, 부부는 집을 처분하려고 이탈리아 남부로 여행을 떠난다. 리오는 사제인 형 니콜라에게 집을 팔고 돌아갈 생각이지만, 메건은 지역의 아름다움과 오래된 건물에 푹 빠진다. 리오가 옛 친구들과 다시 만나며 잊고 지내던 과거를 떠올리는 동안 메건은 집에서 계속 불가사의한 환각과 환청에 시달린다. 메건은 환각이 이끄는 대로 리오 가족을 둘러싼 수수께끼를 조사하기 시작한다. 메건이 오랜 시간 묻혀 있던 정답에 다가갈수록 현실에서의 위협도 점점 강해지기 시작하는데...

Italy, 1994. The war in the Balkans drags on with no end in sight. Elvis, a young man from Sarajevo, is taking pictures of tourists with his Polaroid camera to get by. After his camera is stolen, Elvis decides to visit Rodolfo, a stranger met by chance in Venice. Their brief and lonely encounter unfolds in the timeless landscape of whitewashed towns, green hills and olive trees of southern Italy.

A couple inherits their family's ancient Italian palazzo where sinister shadows from the past reappear.

On December 12, 1969, a bomb kills 17 people and injures many more at a major national bank in Milan, marking the beginning of the Years of Lead. Local anarchists are scapegoated for the massacre by police and the media, but an investigator uncovers a larger subversive project made of far-right fringe groups, corrupt secret services, and other interests that seek to undermine democracy.

The story takes place in the summer of 1980 in Brindisi, Italy. Martino is a young man whose father isn't giving him enough attention. His older brother and his friends, including Silvia, a young northern Italian who spends her holidays in the south of the country and has a romance with Martino. Young people tend to enter an American military base north, and Martino ends up finding a US military officer, Captain Clark, a good friend who teaches him how to surf.

A well known judge comes back to his native region, Salentino in the South of Italy, to find out that his old friend is dead and the woman he loved is now working for a crime organization.

The life of a Northern Italian middle-class family is turned upside down after their 12-year-old son falls overboard during a sea trip, only to be picked up by a boat of illegal immigrants.

영화는 1966년부터 2003년까지의 시간이 로마 중류층 가정 카라티의 두 형제 니콜라와 마테오를 축으로 보여준다. 니콜라(루이지 로 카시오)는 침착하고 다정하고 쾌활한 의대생이며 마테오(알레시오 보니)는 반항적이고 격정적인 철학도이다. 형제는 모두 자유와 사회개혁을 꿈꾸는 이상주의자이다. 둘은 서로 극단적으로 상반된 길을 가고 두 형제의 삶과 국가의 소용돌이치는 역사가 서로 뒤엉킨다. 60년대 플로렌스 대홍수 복구사업장에서 정신과 의사 공부를 하는 니콜라와 순간적으로 대학을 중퇴하고 군인이 된 마테오가 헤어졌다 오랜만에 다시 만난다. 여기서 니콜라는 허무주의 정치사상을 가지고 후에 테러단 붉은 연대와 관계를 맺는 아름다운 음악학도 줄리아(소니아 베르가마스코)와 사랑에 빠지고 그녀는 나중에 니콜라의 아내가 된다. 두 형제의 재회의 기쁨은 얼마가지 못하고 다시 둘은 헤어진다. 또 니콜라는 이탈리아 북부 투린의 대학으로 전학을 가고 여기서 일어나는 격렬한 노동투쟁에 끼여든다. 한편 경찰이 된 마테오가 시위진압에 투입되면서 다시 두 형제는 서로 정반대 편에 서서 만난다. 영화는 니콜라와 마테오 그리고 이들의 친구와 가족과 주변 인물들을 둘러싸고 붉은 연대의 테러, 나라를 뒤흔든 정치 스캔들, 시실리의 반마피아 운동 그리고 월드컵 축구 등 굵직굵직한 이탈리아의 역사들이 커다란 그림을 그린다.
