주인공 맥클란은 기자들과 함께 스파이 조직에 연루되면서 복잡한 암살을 비롯한 사건들이 벌어진다. 기자의 카메라에 숨겨진 총으로 벌어지는 암살 장면이나, 네덜란드의 풍물인 풍차가 등장하는 스펙타클한 장관, 그리고 전쟁이 시작되는 날 런던에서 출발하는 대서양 횡단 비행기 씬 등이 유명한 이 영화의 장면들이다. 초창기 영화에서 보여준 스토리 스텔링이라는 단순한 이야기 나열에 그치지 않고, 영화 본래의 기술인 볼거리 중심의 미장센 연출을, 완벽한 카메라와 편집, 계산된 연기 지도 등으로 보여준다. 이 영화가 헐리웃에서 대성공을 거두자 제작자들이 히치콕에게 찾아와 최고의 대우를 해 주겠다는 계약서가 줄을 이었다고 한다.

평범하고 수줍음 잘 타는 그녀는 몬테 카를로에서 몇년 전 아내 레베카와 사별한 부유한 신사 맥심을 만나 사랑에 빠진다. 그녀는 아직도 전처를 잃은 슬픔에 다소 불안정한 심리 상태의 맥심과 결혼 후 그의 대저택 '맨덜리'에 입성한다. 아름답지만 음산하고 기묘한 분위기를 풍기는 대저택 ‘맨덜리’는 죽은 레베카가 마치 살아 숨쉬고 있는 것처럼 레베카에게 깊게 물들어 있다. 집사 댄버스 부인 마저 시종일관 무표정함을 유지하며 경계심을 드러내 그녀를 노이로제 상태로 몰아간다. 하지만 남편 맥심은 자신의 심적 고통 때문에 미처 그녀에게 신경을 쓰지 못하고 그들 부부의 결혼 생활은 위기를 맞이하게 된다. 어느 비 바람 몰아치던 저녁, ‘맨덜리’ 저택의 비밀이 드러날 사건이 일어나는데…

Mary Smith decides after a lifetime of being a shut-in to do something wild while her father is out campaigning for the presidency, so she takes off for the family's home in West Palm Beach and inadvertently becomes romantically entangled with earnest cowboy Stretch Willoughby. Neither the dalliance nor the cowboy fit with the upper class image projected by her esteemed father, forcing her to choose.

Mobster "Baby Face" Martin returns home to visit the New York neighborhood where he grew up, dropping in on his mother, who rejects him because of his gangster lifestyle, and his old girlfriend, Francey, now a syphilitic prostitute. Martin also crosses paths with Dave, a childhood friend struggling to make it as an architect, and the Dead End Kids, a gang of young boys roaming the streets of the city's East Side slums.

In 1921, British Lord Athleigh arrives in Dublin with his daughter, Helen, to engage in peace talks. As wanted Irish rebel leader Dennis Riordan is not recognized in public, he is able to move about freely and saves the Athleighs from an assassination attempt by a radical faction. Dennis and Helen meet again and, unaware of his position, Helen falls in love with him. Later when Dennis admits his identity, Helen must make a fateful decision.

도스워드 자동차 회사의 설립자인 샘 도스워스(Sam Dodsworth: 월터 휴스턴 분)는 미국 굴지의 사업가이다. 경제적으로 안정된 생활 속에서 중년의 삶을 살아가고 있던 어느날, 아내 프랜(Fran Dodsworth: 루스 채터톤 분)의 청으로 은퇴할 것을 결심한다. 사회적 책임에서 벗어나 자유롭게 새 인생을 시작하자는 아내의 소망에 따른 것이다. 샘과 프랜은 주위의 만류에도 불구하고 제2의 인생에 대한 희망으로 유럽 여행을 떠난다. 뉴욕항에서 이들을 배웅하는 친구들과 갓 결혼한 딸 에밀리(Emily: 캐서린 마로 분) 부부. 런던으로 향하는 배 안에서 프랜에게 첫 눈에 반한 아놀드(Arnold Iselin: 폴 루카스 분)는 그녀의 주위를 맴돌며 프랜의 마음을 흔들리게 한다. 처음에는 주저하던 프랜도 20년동안 나무랄데 없는 남편이었던 샘 대신 아놀드를 자신의 변화된 삶 속에 어울리는 동반자로 여기게 된다. 역시 배 안에서 만난 이혼녀 에디뜨(Edith Cortright: 매리 애스터 분)와 함께 샘, 프랜 그리고 아놀드는 런던에 도착한다. 그러나 아내 프랜과는 달리 계속되는 여행과 파티에 싫증을 내고 있던 샘은 집으로 돌아가길 원하고 결국 혼자 돌아가게 된다.
