'스무스 토크'는 노벨 문학상 후보로 거론 되어온 미국작가 조이스 캐롤 오츠(Joyce Carol Oates)의 1966년 단편소설 'Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?' 원작으로 초프라 감독의 남편 톰 콜(Tom Cole)이 각색했다. 여기에 인기 가수 제임스 테일러(James Taylor)가 음악감독을 맡았으며, 그의 히트곡 '핸디맨(HandyMan)'이 피날레에 흐른다. 흥행엔 실패했지만, 1986년 선댄스 영화제 심사위원대상을 수상한 수작이다.

A divorced woman (Michael Learned) moves to San Francisco from Omaha with her young son. She's trying to re-build her life after her divorce, she leaves her son with his grandmother. She joins the choir of a local church. She has some issues with the choirmaster (John Houseman) who tries to get the choir into shape before the Christmas concert. The choir overcome some personal setbacks as they all deal with personal issues. Zoe (Michael Learned) thinks of quitting the choir all together when push comes to shove.

The "Missing Heart Murders" are plaguing San Francisco - dead bodies that turn up with their hears surgically removed! So a weak-stomached homicide cop looks into the possibilities of a black market for human organs, while across town a man must make a difficult decision regarding his wife, who needs a transplant...

샌프란시스코 형사 칼라한은 비정한 성격 때문에 '더티 해리'로 불린다. 어느 날 어려운 고비를 물리치고 연쇄살인범을 체포하지만 부패한 상관은 범인을 석방시키고, 오히려 칼라한이 범인을 고문한 혐의로 고소된다. 이에 분개한 그는 범법자를 잡아 자기 손으로 직접 응징한다.
