이탈리아에서의 테러 예고를 받고 쿠로다(오다 유지)는 이탈리아 로마로 출국을 한다. 그는 테러로 부터 일본인들을 안전하게 보호하기 위해 주 이탈리아 일본 대사관 외교관으로 파견 되었다. 그러던 중 한 도시에서 일본인 소녀가 실종되는 사건이 발생한다. 일본인 관광객 사에코(아마미 유키)의 딸로, 사에코는 죽은 남편을 추억을 하기위해 이탈리아에서 여행중이었다. 쿠로다는 대사관 연수생 카나에(토다 에리카)와 함께 이 사건의 통역을 맡게 된다. 그런데 사에코에게 걸려온 범인의 전화를 쿠로다가 받는 실수로 엉뚱하게 가짜 남편으로 오해를 받으면서 이 사건에 휘말리게 된다. 1939: Rome stands on the brink of World War II. In the midst of this political and social tension famed producer Davide Rieta is making a major film. The two lead actors, the German woman Kristina Baumgarten and the English man James Clavel ace each others' initial antagonism and eventually fall in love. Meanwhile the fascist police are looking for an excuse to arrest the Jewish filmmaker and any other potential "troublemakers." The producer and his crew decide to make one final extraordinary effort to complete the film - against all odds.
