Midori Mantani and Masao Minamisawa are both 28-years-old. They have dated for 4 years, but their relationship seems to be just going through the motions. They think about breaking up. At that time, Midori becomes pregnant. Midori and Masao decide to marry. While preparing for their wedding, they become more familiar with each other's background. Midori Mantani grew up with parents who ran an iron factory in a provincial city that didn't offer much in terms of culture. Unlike Midori, Masao Minamisawa grew up in Tokyo and his family was wealthy. His father worked as a photographer and his mother was a doctor. He now works as a web designer. The couple begin to have a better understanding of each other.

Translucent Tree is centered around divorced Chigiri, a suburban middle-aged mother taking care of her teenage daughter, Mayu, and her ailing father Kaho. Her life is mundane and rather hopeless until Go, a TV producer from Tokyo, pays a visit to her town and the tree they shared time under some twenty years back after a TV commercial shoot. His remembrances of her, the tree, and the long unrequited love stir both of their hearts to fumbling action as they re-discover the love between them.

에도 시대, 한 마을의 관가에서 일하는 사람들이 아직 출근하지 않은 새로 부임한 사또에 대해 험담을 하고 있다. 이전에 있던 사또가 너무나 나쁜 짓을 많이 하여 쫓겨나고, 새롭게 부임한 사또는 에도에서 온 자로 이름은 모치쯔키 고헤이타. 그는 딱딱한 관직에 있으면서 놀기도 좋아했지만 정의감에 불타는 인물로 붙여진 별명이 "정의의 사도 헤이타"라고 불리울 정도로 불의를 보면 참지 못하는 성격을 갖은 자였다. 이 마을의 외곽지역에 밀무역, 매춘, 도박, 살상 등이 아무렇지 일어나는 곳이 있었는데, 그 곳에는 3명의 두목이 권력을 잡고 있었으며, 그 두목들은 마을의 유지들과도 오랜 세월 결탁을 맺고 있었다. 헤이타는 그들의 부정을 퇴치하기 위해 이곳에 부임해 온 것이었다.
