The story of martial arts clubs who have created their own city infrastructure after tiring of government initiatives. Responding to the greed and corruption creeping into the other clubs, headed by capitalist-wannabe Moses, The Purifiers battle to maintain the successful system which has rid the city of crime and violence.

New York, The Bronx, 1980. Two Italian boys Joey Esposito and Louie Mazerino jump to the defence of a smaller Puerto Rican boy, J.J. Lopez, when J.J. is threatened by six schoolyard bullies. The three boys soon become best friends, and they always look out for each other. However, their innocence is shattered when they witness Big Tony, the local Mob boss kill a man. The three boys vow to each other to keep it a secret. Fifteen years later, the three boys, now in their late twenties are still the best of friends and still living in The Bronx. They dream of opening their own bar. Desperate to better themselves, Joey devises a scheme to steal money from Big Tony and open their own Joint.

악(惡)의 천사 가브리엘(Angel Gabriel: 크리스토퍼 월컨 분)은 전쟁 살인광 호손 대령이 죽자 그의 잔인한 영혼을 이용하여 지옥의 왕국을 만들려고 한다. 이를 눈치챈 선(善)의 천사 사이몬(Simon: 에릭 스톨츠 분)이 호손 대령의 장례식이 치뤄지는 침니록이란 마을에 먼저 도착, 그의 영혼을 훔쳐 메리(Mary: 모리아 쉬닝 도브 스나이더 분)라는 소녀의 몸 속에 숨겨둔다. 신부의 길을 포기하고 형사가 된 토마스는 도심에서 발생한 살인 사건이 호손 대령과 연루된 것을 알고 침니록을 찾아가나 사이몬 시체만 접할 뿐이다. 그의 시체를 검시한 결과 도심에서 발생한 사건과 동일하다는 것을 알아내고 침니록에 범인이 있다는 걸 직감한다. 사건의 실마리를 찾는데 급급한 그는 메리가 대령의 영혼을 뒤집어 쓴채 혼수상태에 빠져 있다는 걸 전해듣고 메리의 집으로 향하던 중 가브리엘과 마주치는데...
