아마츄어 쇼 코미디언인 돈 록우드(진 켈리)와 코스모(도날드 오코너)는 공연을 하며 이곳저곳을 떠돌아다니다 뜻대로 되지않자 새 일자리를 얻기위해 헐리우드로 온다. 그런데 우연찮게 돈 록우드는 마뉴멘탈 영화사의 스턴트맨 역을 따내게 되고, 당시 최고의 인기를 누리고 있던 여배우인 리나 레이먼트(쟌 하겐)와 함께 다수의 영화에 출연함으로써 단연 스타로 급부상하게 된다. 그러나 화려한 영광도 잠시, 헐리웃 영화계가 무성영화에서 유성영화 체제로 전환됨으로써 목소리 연기가 너무나 형편없는 리나 레이먼트 때문에 영화를 완전히 망치게 되는데...

미국 태생의 제리 멀리간(Jerry Mulligan: 진 켈리 분)은 화가로서의 수업을 위해 파리에 정착한다. 그에게는 피아니스트인 아담(Adam Cook: 오스카 레반트 분)과 프랑스계 가수인 헨리(Henri Baurel: 죠지스 구터리 분)가 같은 건물의 친구들이었고 거리의 꼬마 친구들이 많이 있었다. 그날도 거리의 꼬마 친구들과 노래를 부르다 자기가 그린 작품을 골목에 전시해 놓고 손님을 기다리던 중 금발의 이쁜 미국 여인 마일로(Milo Roberts: 니나 포치 분)를 만나게 된다. 그의 작품을 인정하는 그녀의 호의로 그는 그녀와 사귀게 되고 부자인 그녀의 도움으로 파리 문화계의 인사들과 접촉하게 된다. 그러나 그는 향수 가게의 점원으로 있는 리사(Lise Bouvier: 레슬리 카론 분)라는 아가씨에게 반해 있었고 곧 서로 사랑하게 된다. 그러나 리사에게는 이미 결혼을 약속한 애인이 있었고 그가 바로 그의 친구인 헨리란는 사실을 고백 받는다. 그리고 곧 결혼식을 올린뒤 미국으로 떠난다는 말을 듣고 비련에 빠져버린다. 한편 마일로는 제리를 위해 전시회를 준비 중이었고 그의 환심을 사려고 온갖 방법을 다 동원한 리사의 고백에 상심이 된 제리는 마일로를 유혹 예술 대학생들의 밤의 축제에 데리고 간다. 그곳에서 춤을 추고있는 헨리와 리사 본 제리는 자기가 사랑하는 여인은 바로 리사라고 마일로에게 고백한다. 그리고 마지막밤 그녀를 떠나보낸 제리는 리사와의 환상의 궁전에서 춤을 추기 시작한다.
