가수의 꿈을 키워나가는 에드나는 고향 필라델피아에서의 가요제에서 1위를 차치하고, 레코드를 취입할 수 있는 기회를 잡는다. 하지만 남자가수만을 우대하는 레코드사에서 그녀에게는 좀처럼 기회가 오지 않는다. 에드나는 포기하지 않고,음악에 대한 열정과 자신의 재능을 믿고 남성위주의 대중음악계에 뛰어들 것을 결심한다. 그렇게 동분서주하지만 무명의 티를 벗지 못하던 에드나는 식당에서 조엘이라는 음반제작자를 만나고 그의 권유에 따라 작곡가의 길로 들어서 드니스 웨이벌리라는 예명으로 본격적인 활동을 시작한다. 또한 고향 가요제때 알게되었던 흑인 여가수 도리스를 조엘에게 소개시키고 자신의 곡을 주어 큰 성공을 거둔 에드나는 그 이후로 계속적인 히트를 기록하게 되고,사랑도 성취하게 되어 결혼하여 아이도 낳아 행복한 생활을 하게 된다. 하지만 남편의 외도를 목격하게 된 그녀는 남편과 이혼을 하고, 둘째 아이를 낳아 혼자 기르면서 생활하게 된다. 잠시 주춤하던 차에 조엘은 그녀에게 음반취입을 권유하고 작업과정에서 음반 제작가 레이와 재혼했지만, 결국 음반은 실패하고, 정신질환을 앓던 레이는 자살하게 되는데...
