Teruyo Nogami

An account of the life and work of legendary Japanese actor Toshirō Mifune (1920-97), the most prominent actor of the Golden Age of Japanese cinema.

A documentary about Nogami Teruyo, who for nearly half a century stood by Akira Kurosawa as a screenwriting collaborator, a script supervisor, and a companion.

Akira Kurosawa: The Epic and the Intimate is a French documentary film that consists primarily of interviews with Kurosawa’s European collaborators from the time of the making of Ran, with footage from the film interspersed between the talking heads.

Set in Tokyo in 1940, the peaceful life of the Nogami Family suddenly changes when the father, Shigeru, is arrested and accused of being a Communist. His wife Kayo works frantically from morning to night to maintain the household and bring up her two daughters with the support of Shigeru's sister Hisako and Shigeru's ex-student Yamazaki, but her husband does not return. WWII breaks out and casts dark shadows on the entire country, but Kayo still tries to keep her cheerful determination, and sustain the family with her love. This is an emotional drama of a mother and an eternal message for peace.

In this documentary, script supervisor Teruyo Nogami, who first worked with Akira Kurosawa on RASHOMON, catches up with many members of the crew, including cowriter Shinobu Hashimoto and assistant director Tokuzo Tanaka. They talk about the screenplay’s evolution, difficulties during the shooting of the film, and Kurosawa’s working methods.

16세기 일본 전국시대, 손님들과 함께 멧돼지 사냥을 끝낸 성주 이치몬지 히데토라는 일흔의 나이로 자신의 권력을 아들들에게 넘겨주겠다는 결심을 굳힌다. 그리고 사냥을 함께 한 다른 영주는 자신의 딸을 그의 아들과 혼인시키려 한다. 아들들을 따로 불러 모은 그는 오랫동안 곰곰이 생각해서 내린 결정이라며 장남인 타로가 자신의 뒤를 이어 가문을 이끌 것이라 선언한다. 그리고 둘째, 셋째 아들인 지로와 사부로에게는 두 번째와 세 번째 성과 그에 딸린 영토를 주겠다고 한다. 그는 난세에 외곽에서 호위대를 거느리고 자식들에게 기대어 안락하게 여생을 보낼 생각이였다. 하지만 막내인 사부로는 그 자리에서 아버지가 망령이 들었다고 비난하게 되고 이에 분개한 히데토라는 사부로와 절연한다. 충직한 탄고가 사부로를 감싸지만 그는 들은 체 만 체다. 그 과정을 지켜본 후지마키는 사부로를 자신의 영지로 받아들인다. 한편 처음에는 권력에 별로 욕심이 없었던 장남 타로는 ‘모든 권력과 호칭을 넘겨받지 못하면 그림자에 불과하다’는 아내 카에데의 부추김에 차츰 히데토라의 권력을 완전히 차지하려고 한다. 그리고 그 사이 히데토라가 타로의 부하를 화살로 쏴 죽이는 일까지 발생하면서 갈등이 점점 고조되는데...

1910년, 한 남자가 ‘데르수 우잘라’의 무덤을 찾아오고 시간은 과거로 돌아가 이들의 이야기를 들려준다. 블라디미르는 러시아 오지의 지도를 만들기 위해 탐험을 하던 중 우연히 사냥꾼 데르수를 만난다. 마침 안내인이 필요했던 그는 데르수에게 함께 동행해 줄 것을 요청하고, 이때부터 이들의 인연이 시작된다. 구로사와 아키라 감독이 실존 인물인 데르수 우잘라의 삶을 70mm 카메라로 영화화했다. 1975년 모스크바영화제 감독상 수상.

나가사키에 있는 독일의료원에서 의학공부를 마치고 에도로 돌아온 야스모토는 시골 병원에서 인턴 과정을 밟게 된다. 귀족들을 상대하는 왕립의료원에서 일하기를 원했던 그는 하층민들이 주로 오는 공동 진료소로 오게 되자 불만을 품게 된다. 하지만 자만심으로 가득 차 있던 야스모토는 ‘붉은 수염’이라 불리는 시골 병원장의 진정한 모습에 점차 동화되어 가면서 진정한 의술을 배우게 된다.

During World War II, Japan sends gold to the Phillipines. After the war, the gold is lost in the bay of Manille. Former soldier Takeichi Matsuo is now working as a business executive. He meets Mintsura Gunji, the boss of a large company, who offers him to go to the Philippines and bring back the gold.

신발 제조 회사의 중역인 곤도는 회사의 주도권을 잡기 위해 자신의 전 재산을 회사에 투자한 상태다. 어느 날 그는 자신의 아들이 납치됐으며 범인이 엄청난 몸값을 요구하고 있다는 통보를 받고 회사냐 아들이냐 하는 선택의 기로에 서게 된다. 하지만 정작 납치된 것은 그의 아들이 아니라 그의 운전사의 아들이란 사실이 밝혀지면서 곤도는 또 다른 고민에 빠지게 되는데...

늦은 밤 일군의 젊은이들이 외딴 집에 모여 그들의 성에서 일어나고 있는 부패를 일소하기로 결의한다. 하지만 곧 그들은 그곳에 또 한 명의 낯선 사람이 자신들의 얘기를 엿듣고 있다는 것을 알아챈다. 그는 산주로라는 이름의 떠돌이 사무라이로 그 젊은이들이 잘못된 판단을 하고 있다며 비웃는다. 그리고는 이 슬기롭지는 않지만 정의로운 젊은이들과 뜻을 같이 하기로 한다.

떠돌이 무사가 어느 마을의 여인숙에 들린다. 그곳은 두 패로 나뉜 악인의 무리가 세력다툼을 벌여 유령 마을처럼 되어버린 야도바 마을. 무사는 악인의 무리 중에서 돈을 많이 주는 쪽인 비단을 파는 사람들의 요짐보가 되어 일을 해준다. 하지만 술을 파는 무리 중 한 명의 아들인 우노스케가 권총을 갖고 마을로 들어오며 상황은 급변한다. 우노스케는 자신이 속한 파와 적대적인 관계에 있는 무리들을 무차별적으로 죽인다. 운 좋게도 요짐보는 마을 여관주인의 도움으로 마을 밖으로 도망쳐 근처에 있는 절 가까이 숨어 있는다. 하지만 얼마 후 여관주인이 우노스케에 의해 납치당했다는 사실을 알고 다시 마을로 들어오는데...

전란이 난무하는 헤이안 시대, 폭우가 쏟아지는 라생문의 처마 밑에서 나뭇꾼과 스님이 심각한 표정으로 생각에 잠겨 있다. 잠시 비를 피하러 그곳에 들른 한 남자. 이들은 이 남자를 상대로 최근에 그 마을에 있었던 기묘한 사건을 들려준다. 사건의 배경은 녹음이 우거진 숲 속. 사무라이 타케히로가 자신의 아내 마사코와 함께 숲 속을 지나고 있었다. 산적 타조마루는 그들 앞에 나타나 속임수로 타케히로를 포박하고 마사코를 겁탈한다. 오후에 그 숲에 들어선 나뭇꾼은 타케히로의 가슴에 칼이 꽂혀있는 것을 발견하고 관청에 신고한다. 타조마루는 체포되고, 행방이 묘연했던 마사코도 불려와 관청에서 심문이 벌어지는데...
