일곱 살 난 주디는 아빠와 새엄마와 함께 여름 휴가를 위해 여행 중이었는데, 숲 속에서 폭풍우를 만나 쉴 곳을 찾다가 비를 피해서 숲 속의 한 저택을 찾게 된다. 저택에는 한 노부부가 살고 있었고, 이들은 수공예 인형을 만들어서 아이들의 벗을 만들어 주는 일을 낙으로 살면서 사는 노인들이다. 저택에는 여자 둘과 랄프라는 남자까지 폭우를 피해 오게 되고 여행객들은 하룻밤을 묵게 된다. 저녁 식사 후 저택의 골동품을 훔치려 하던 여자 한 사람이 살아 움직이는 인형들에게 죽임을 당하고, 여자가 끌려가는 걸 목격한 주디는 아빠와 새엄마에게 말하지만 그들은 믿지 않는다. 인형들은 아이를 사랑할 줄 모르는 주디의 못된 새엄마와, 친구를 잃고 분노하는 다른 여자를 차례로 죽인다.

과학자 크로포드는 에드워드 박사와 함께 인간의 새로운 감각을 깨우는 실험에 몰두한다. 실험이 성공하는 순간 끔찍한 존재와 마주친 크로포드는 정신병원에 갇히고, 실험의 전말을 파헤치기 위해 레이가 크로포드를 찾아온다. 결국 두 사람은 다시 한 번 실험을 시도하고, 돌이킬 수 없는 끔찍한 결과와 마주한다. H.P. 러브크래프트의 원작을 바탕으로 만든 영화.
