Squish! is a meditation on the self through lurid and liquid forms; filtered through both old and foreseeable technology informed by Thai animation history and contemporary culture, and a constant process of constructing and deforming new selves to simulate ‘movements’. By extrapolating and redefining the terms of ‘movement’, be it through psychological, physical or political understandings, the work interweaves the medium of animation with a state of depression.

The film follows the conventions of Thai cinema during the Cold War, where every actor is dubbed by the voice that suits their roles. The hero sounds heroic and the villain sounds villainous. Ang, a transgender sex worker with a pretty, feminine voice is assigned a special mission as an undercover spy. She disguises herself as a cisgender man to enter into a romantic relationship with Jit, a belligerent yet idealistic student activist with an evil voice. Ang must extract important information from Jit. However, the mission goes awry as she slowly falls for him. Apolitical at first, Ang is slowly awakened by Jit to see the other world where people speak in another way.

In this updated homage to the 1930 German silent film of the same title, Thai artist Tulapop Saenjaroen examines the paradox of people relaxing while being filmed. As a film shoot appears to be in perpetual delay, crew members kill time fiddling on their smartphones, all the while under the persistent gaze of the camera.

갈 곳 잃은 자들의 무덤이 되어주는 숲에는 땅에 묻힌 이들의 꿈이 각양각색의 원석이 되어 빛나고 있다. 땅에서 나는 원석의 소리를 듣고 그것을 캐내는 한 어부가 어느 날 반쯤 묻혀 죽어가는 사람을 구해낸다. 어부는 말을 하지 못하는/않는 그에게 통차이라는 이름을 주고 돌보며, 물에서 ‘음’ 소리와 함께 호흡하는 법도 가르친다. 과연 어부는 원석의 소리를 듣는 것처럼 통차이가 내는 무언의 소리를 들을 수 있었던 것일까? 난민이 죽고, 군대가 머물며, 소리 소문 없이 사람이 묻히고 있는 바닷가 마을의 숲에는 이루지 못한 꿈의 빛깔들이 내는 소리로 가득하고, 어둠이 깔렸을 때는 누구도 감히 그것을 확인하러 올 엄두를 내지 못한다. 다양한 원석들이 반짝이며 온 숲을 가득 채우고 우는 소리는 못다 이루고 죽어간 이들이 여전히 내뱉고 있는 호흡일지도 모른다. 원석에 이끌려 다가온다는 바다의 쥐가오리(만타 레이)만이 묻혀버린 자들의 좌절과 꿈의 실체를 두려워하지 않고 다가와 확인할 수 있는 것일까?

스칼라 극장은 1970년에 문을 연 영화관이다. 1000석 규모를 자랑하는 이곳에는 매일 밤 관객들로 가득 차곤 했다. 그 당시만 해도, 영화를 보러 가는 것은 무척이나 특별한 일이었다. 사람들은 극장이란 공간에서 한껏 멋을 내고, 공간 데이트를 하고, 사랑에 빠지곤 했다. 하지만 이제는 이 모든 것이 변했다. 쇼핑몰에는 멀티플렉스 극장이 당연한 듯 들어서 있고, 젊은 세대들은 영화를 휴대전화로 보곤 한다. 하지만 스칼라 극장에서만큼은 시간이 멈춰져 있다. 극장 초창기부터 일했던 직원들이 지금까지 남아있다. 스칼라 극장은 방콕에서 유일하게 남은 단독 영화관이다. 아쉽게도 스칼라 극장이 버텨온 시간 역시 끝을 향해 가고 있다.
