When a good-natured factory supervisor living in Milan with his Northern wife returns to his native Sicily, a decades' old oath forces him to fulfill a nightmarish obligation.

In days of old there lived a son of Hercules, who dwelt near Mount Olympus, and as a result was endowed with godlike powers. A city of civilized people face an army of rampaging barbarians. The people at once go into battle and pray for deliverance from the horror and destruction weighing so heavily over them. Just as all seems lost, our hero arrives to save the day and the beautiful Princess Daphne from certain death. What follows is a tangled web of mystery and duplicity as the son of Hercules falls in love with the princess but finds himself distracted by the earthly form of Venus, “Goddess Of Love.”

Based on a Anton Chekhov short story, this slight tale has some good moments as the drama of a young boy's journey unfolds. The lad comes from peasant stock, and one day his family decides it would be best for him to go live with his uncle in the city. The only problem is that the city is all the way across the Russian steppes, and at this time in history, that arduous journey could only be undertaken by horse and carriage. Reminiscent of the American pioneer wagon trains heading West, the tale lacks any attacks from hostile forces but is filled with charming vignettes. In one part of the journey, the boy comes across some fishermen along a river, harpooning their catch for the day. In another segment, he is entertained when some folk dancers do a lively show. But in general, it is too long and unmomentous a journey to hold attention well for nearly two hours.

유엔회의에 참석하기로 했던 프랑스 외교관이 행방불명되고, 이 의문의 실종사건을 취재하기 위해 기자 모로는 뉴욕으로 파견된다. 그러나 아무 단서도 없이 사라진 외교관의 행방은 묘연하기만 하고, 모로는 냉소적이고 알콜 중독인 사진기자 들마와 함께 외교관의 행방을 좇는다. 결국 그들은 외교관의 부정행위를 알아내지만, 두 사람의 결론은 너무나 다르다. 들마즈는 외교관의 부정을 보도하여 특종을 올리고자 하지만, 모로는 모든 것을 덮어두려고 한다. 미국 필름 누아르를 자신만의 스타일로 재구성하여 프렌치 누아르로 재탄생시킨 멜빌이 그 뿌리인 미국에서 다시 한번 자신만의 멜랑콜리한 스타일로 프렌치 누아르를 만들어냈다. 기자 모로 역을 맡아 열연하는 멜빌을 볼 수 있는 작품이기도 하다. 처럼 2004년에 소개되지 않았던 작품으로, 이번 회고전을 통해 처음 서울 관객들을 만난다.
