약력

Born in Singapore in 1977, he is a Berlinale Talents alumnus and co-founder of the 13 Little Pictures film collective. In 2012, he won the Young Artist Award presented by the Singapore National Arts Council. His debut feature film, White Days, screened in competition at the Hong Kong International Film Festival. His documentary 03-FLATS screened in competition at the Busan International Film Festival as well as in the international architecture biennale in Venice. Fundamentally Happy, co-directed by Tan Bee Thiam, premiered in competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival.

2020년 싱가포르, 핑크 드레스를 휘날리며 사람들의 환호를 받는 ‘오페라 탕’이 드랙 퍼포머로 멋진 데뷔를 알린다. 드랙이 있고, 그 덕에 단짝도 만나고 사랑하는 동성 애인도 곁에 있지만 그를 둘러싼 세계가 매번 명쾌한 건 아니다. 가톨릭 집안, 동성애 처벌법, 징병제는 엄연히 존재하는 현실이고 당면해야 할 일상이다. 영화는 이 복잡한 경계 위에서 치열하게 자기 영토를 확장해온 한 사람을 조명한다. 아흔을 넘긴 할머니와 ‘오페라 탕’의 관계는 특히 인상적이다. ‘오페라 탕’의 의상을 손수 재단하고, LGBTQ 행사에 동행하는 할머니를 보게 될 줄이야.
