Noriko had been engaged to marry Toshiyuki Fujimura, who worked at her father’s bank. One day however, Fujimura mysteriously disappears. From that day, Noriko keeps herself locked up in her room. After three years of Noriko shutting herself up like a doll without a soul, Fujimura suddenly returns. Noriko’s family’s first reaction was strong rejection, but Noriko asks no questions and embraces him warmly. One day, as Noriko is cleaning her husband’s room, three envelopes accidentally fall from the pages of one of the books she had picked up. The first letter is dated August 11th, saying that his wife had suddenly taken ill. The second, dated August 20th, says that his wife is now critically sick, and the third letter, dated September 1st, is an announcement of his wife’s death. The wife is obviously Noriko, but she is alive and well. Do the letters then mean a preliminary notice of Noriko’s death?

Taking the Chilean coup as an example, a group of young officers plan to overthrow the Japanese government on V-J Day. They aim to abolish the post-war constitution, restore the national army and revive the traditional spirit of Japan. As the conspiracy is exposed, the coup squadrons are wiped out one by one. Seijuro Fujihana, head master of the Fujihana dance school, is a proud and lonely artist. And because of his character, his group lacks the prosperity of others. He wishes his daughter Kasumi, gifted like himself, to take over and develop the Fujihana, but she wishes to marry Hiroshi, head of a jazz band which her father opposes. Kisaburo, Seijuro's No.1 disciple, wants to marry Kasumi and take over the Fujihana with the backing of the chairman of the supporters' association.

Tora-San, an itinerant peddler who is thrown out of his father's house twenty years before but reconnects with his aunt, uncle and sister Sakura. Tora wreaks some havoc in their lives, like getting drunk and silly at a marriage meeting and ruining Sakura's chance to marry someone, as well as just being a real pain to those around him. There is a sentimental side to him also, and the best way to describe him is that he grows on you.

딸 미치코와 함께 살고 있는 초로의 신사 히라야마. 히라야마는 친한 친구로부터 딸을 결혼시키라는 이야기를 듣지만 자신의 눈에 비친 딸은 어리게만 보인다. 이후 술에 취한 중학교 은사를 집까지 배웅했다가, 그 옛날 아름다웠던 은사의 딸이 결혼도 하지 않은 채 아버지를 걱정하며 늙고 초췌한 모습으로 변해있는 모습을 보고 딸 미치코를 떠올린다. 일본영화계 전체가 하향세를 그릴 즈음 오즈와 노다 콤비가 만든 마지막 작품이자 오즈의 유작. 실제 미혼으로 평생을 살았던 오즈가 어머니에 대해 느끼는 애정은 남달랐고, 이 작품의 시나리오 집필 중에 어머니를 잃은 오즈가 바라보는 노년의 고독 또한 다른 사람들보다 더욱 가혹하고 엄격할 수밖에 없어 보인다. 밝고 유머러스한 화면의 저변에 흐르는 적막감이 선명하게 그려져 가슴을 에이는 이 영화는 이제까지의 작품 중 최고의 원숙미를 자랑하는 영화다. 부드러운 유머와 함께 이제까지 즐겨 다루어왔던 이전 테마로 다시 돌아간 작품이다.

다케오는 사치스러운 생활을 즐긴다. 반면 남편 모키치는 성실하고 돈을 쓸 줄 모르는데다가 직장과 집을 오가는 생활에만 익숙한 일벌레다. 다케오는 그런 남편이 답답해 매번 무시하기 일쑤다. 어느 날 다케오와 모키치는 크게 다투게 되고 그 일로 다케오는 친정집으로 향한다. 그 사이 남편은 우루과이로 출장을 떠나고 다케오는 모키치를 그리워한다.

혼기에 찬 노리코는 조건이 좋은 혼처를 거부하고 부모 형제와 상의 없이 오빠의 친구이자 아이 딸린 홀아비 켄이치와 결혼하겠다고 선언한다. 갑작스런 노리코의 태도에 가족들은 당황한다. 오즈 야스지로의 대다수 영화들이 산업화와 서구화에 따른 가정의 해체에 관한 것이듯 이 작품도 딸의 결혼으로 대가족이 해체된다는 기본 골격을 따라 몇 개의 에피소드로 연결 된 홈 드라마이다. “스토리 자체보다 더욱 깊은 의미를 지닌 ‘윤회’라든가 ‘무상’이라든가 하는 것을 묘사하고 싶었다”는 오즈의 언급처럼 이 작품에서 스토리나 플롯이 중요한 기능을 하지 않음은 명백하게 드러난다. 일상적인 삶에 대한 세심한 탐구, 이야기의 과감한 생략, 시공간의 독특한 사용, 계속해서 변하는 행동의 리듬을 통해 오즈 특유의 소시민적 관점이 투영된 작품이다.
