이브는 멕시코시티 최고급 호텔의 메이드다. 영화는 손님이 떠난 방을 청소하고 침대를 정돈하고 욕실용품을 구비하는 그녀의 업무를 현미경으로 바라보듯 관찰한다. 종종 손님들이 두고 간 물건을 발견하기도 하고 또 어떤 손님들의 특별한 부탁을 들어주기도 하지만, 그녀의 일상은 익명의 손님들과 호텔 방 사이에서 무미건조하게 채워진다. 호텔은 마치 현대 멕시코 사회를 축소해놓은 듯한 공간 같다. 릴라 아빌레스의 데뷔작 는 호텔이라는 계급사회 가장 밑바닥에 있는 이브를 호텔의 다른 직원 그리고 손님들과 병치시키면서 그녀의 사회적, 계급적 위치를 끊임없이 환기시킨다. 한편 카메라는 이브가 일하는 모습을 숭고함이 느껴질 정도로 집요하고 정교하게 포착하면서, 관객들로 하여금 그녀의 노동을 또 다른 관점에서 바라보게끔 한다. 승진 하나만을 바라보고 묵묵히 성실하게 일해 오던 이브가 호텔 바깥으로 나오는 영화의 마지막은 오늘날 여성 노동자의 현실에 대해 영화가 던지는 어떤 강력한 코멘트처럼 다가온다. 절친인 카밀라를 무참하게 살해한 용의자로 기소되면서 평범한 중상류층 소녀 돌로레스의 삶은 송두리째 무너진다. 영화는 돌로레스가 기소된 지 2년 후, 재판을 준비하는 돌로레스의 가족을 보여주며 시작한다. 그녀를 향해 미디어의 관심이 집중되고 변호인의 재판 전략이 세밀하게 마련되면서 돌로레스와 가족의 긴장감은 커져만 가고, 재판이 진행되면서 그녀의 혐의가 벗겨지기는커녕 점점 의혹만 커진다. 줄거리 요약으로 보면 는 끔찍한 범죄와 연루된 한 소녀의 법정 투쟁 스릴러처럼 보이지만, 영화는 정작 그녀가 범인인지를 아닌지를 밝히는 진실의 폭로나 그 극적인 전개에는 관심이 없다. 그보다는 재판을 이기기 위한 ‘이야기’가 구성되는 방식과 이에 개입하는 미디어나 변호인단 같은 사회적 담론의 장치들, 그리고 그 안에서 결국 ‘구성되는 것’일 뿐인 진실 속에서 돌파구를 찾아야 하는 돌로레스와 그 가족이 겪는 심리적 변화에 주목한다. 요컨대, 는 피고인의 판결이 아니라 피고인이라는 ‘상황’에 대한 영화다. The movie takes as a central point the way in which Fernando Carrera's case was set up: the manipulation and alteration of evidence at the scene; the manipulation by the police of the testimonies of the few witnesses called to declare; the manipulation of national media by Rubén Maugeri, key witness and president of the 34th Precinct Friends Association. On the other hand, we show how Fernando Carrera lives his days in prison, knowing he is another victim of police excesses and of a legal system that unjustly convicted him
