빈부의 격차가 심한 대도시 봄베이 서커스단에 혼자 남겨진 소년 크리수나(Krishna/Chaipu: Shafiq Syed)는 차(Tea)를 팔면서 거리의 부랑아 무리에 흡수된다. 그가 사는 일대를 관리하는 바바(Baba: Nana Patekar), 그와 동거하는 레이카(Rekha: Aneeta Kanwar), 레이카의 딸 만쥬(Manju: Hansa Vithal) 등과 친해진 크리수나는 그 곳에서의 생활에 잘 적응해 간다. 그러던 어느 날 창녀촌에서 만난 네팔 여인에게 반해 버린다. 하지만 그 여인은 바바의 작전대로 창녀가 되어버리고 소년 크리수나는 이런 현실 속에서 조용히 봄베이의 묻혀진 이중성을 바라본다.

Ashok moved to New York only days after the wedding, to a woman he barely knew; the match was arranged in the traditional way. Now Ashok sells magazines in a subway station at 116th Street, lives in a cell- sized apartment and cherishes his new freedom. The film follows Ashok through such American activities as a visit to a store that sells running shoes. Then it follows him back to India, where Hansa waits with a baby he has never seen, and with a great many questions as to her future. "
