현대 무용의 어머니이자 이사도라 덩컨에게 깊은 감명을 준 로이 풀러의 이야기를 바탕으로 한 는 시카고 외곽에서 태어난 ‘마리 루이즈 풀러’가 색채 무용의 전문가로 파리 오페라 무대에 서기까지의 험난한 과정을 그린다. 아버지를 잃은 마리 루이즈는 뉴욕에 살고 있는 어머니를 찾아가 몸을 의탁하며, 여배우의 꿈을 좇는다. 대사 하나 없는 배역을 맡은 마리 루이즈는 무대 위에서 실수로 춤을 추게 되고, 관객의 열띤 호응에 힘입어 막간을 때우는 무용수가 된다. 마리 루이즈는 ‘로이’라는 무대명으로 개명한 후, 자신만의 독특한 춤을 개발한다. 하지만 절친 케이트가 로이의 춤을 모방하며 새로운 스타로 떠오르자, 로이는 자신에게 호의적이었던 백작의 돈을 훔쳐 파리로 도망친다. 그리고 그곳에서 자신의 춤에 거울과 조명을 더해 ‘색채 무용’이라는 새로운 장르를 개척하며 ‘꿈의 꽃이 활짝 폈다’라는 극찬을 받는다. 하지만 로이는 육체적으로 과도한 압력을 받는 춤과 극단적인 집중조명 때문에 점점 쇠약해지고, 그런 로이 앞에 이사도라 덩컨이라는 신예 무용가가 운명처럼 등장하는데…… 미국 중부 농장 출신의 로이 퓰러가 유럽 ‘벨에포크’ 카바레의 명사가 되고, 종국에는 파리 오페라를 주름잡게 될 줄은 그 누구도 상상하지 못했다. 파리를 사로잡은 그녀는 당대의 아이콘이자 상징으로 우뚝 선다. 혁명과 같은 삶을 살며 춤의 역사를 바꾼 한 근대 여성의 치열한 운명을 그린 수작이다.
