미국 중산층 가정 출신인 청년 찰리 호먼(Charles Horman: 존 쉐아 분)은 아내 베시(Beth Horman: 시시 스페이식 분)와 같이 남미의 칠레에 가서 그곳에서 불편한 생활을 마다않고 자그마한 신문 등 출판물을 만들며 살고 있다. 찰리는 데이빗, 프랭크, 테리(Terry Simon: 멜라니 메이론 분) 등 의기투합한 젊은이들과 나름대로의 인생관, 세계관을 펴고 있다. 뉴욕에 살고 있는 아버지 애드 호먼(Ed Horman: 잭 레몬 분)은 그러한 아들 찰리가 못마땅하다. 랄리의 아내, 그러니까 며느리가 돼 있는 베시가 아들을 그렇게 만들었다고 여기고 베시를 싫어하는 터였다. 그런데 칠레에 가 있는 아들 찰리에게 문제가 생겼다. 실종됐다는 베시의 연락이다. 칠레로 달려온 아버지는 베시로부터 실종 경위를 듣는다. 그 나라에서 쿠데타가 일어난 날 찰리와 베시의 친구인 테리는 '비냐'라는 곳에 가 있었는데, 관광 여행으로 베시는 바쁜 일로 동행하지 못했다. 그런데 비냐에서 찰리는 그 나라 군대의 쿠데타를 보게 되었는데, 미국의 고급장교들이 비냐에 왜 와 있는가하며 의심했다고 한다. 바로 찰리는 이 나라 쿠데타에 미군이 개입돼 있다는 심증을 갖게 된 것이다. 그 단계에서 찰리는 실종이 아닌 쿠데타군이 잡아간 것이다. 그런데 더더욱 재미있는 건 쿠데타군은 미대사관의 허락이 없이는 감히 미국 시민을 어쩌지 못하도록 되어있는데.

The Five Forty-Eight, drawn from a Cheever story about the fictional New York suburb of Shady Hill, concerns an advertising man, John Blake (Laurence Luckinbill), who is emotionally estranged from his wife and those around him. His disturbed secretary, Miss Dent (Mary Beth Hurt), whom he has seduced and then fired and discarded, pursues him harrowingly, and in a final scene in which she holds him at gunpoint in a field beyond the Shady Hill railroad station, she forces him to confront the squalor of his life.
