어느 시골 마을. 도쿄에서 발령 받아 온 인턴 의사 소마는 동네 사람들의 건강을 세심하게 돌보는 이노와 함께 지내며 의사로서의 자부심을 느낀다. 그러던 어느 날 이노가 갑자기 실종되고 경찰까지 출동하여 사라진 그의 행방을 찾아 수사를 펼친다. 주변 사람들을 상대로 그의 신상을 조사하던 중 이노의 비밀스런 과거가 밝혀지게 되고 절대적인 믿음으로 이노를 의지했던 마을 사람들은 그에 대한 기억을 하나씩 되살리며 서로 엇갈리기 시작하는데…
100년 전, 일본에는 ‘무시’라는 신기한 생물이 있었다. 정령도 유령도 원령도 아닌 이 생명체는 때때로 인간에게 빙의되어 불가사의한 자연 현상을 불러일으켰다. 무시의 생명의 근원을 조사하여 수수께끼를 푸는 한편, 무시로 인해 고통 받는 사람들을 치유하는 능력을 가진 자들을 사람들은 ‘무시시’라고 불렸다. 무시시인 깅코(오다기리 죠)는 무시를 잡아끄는 체질 때문에 한곳에 머물지 못하고 정처 없는 방랑을 계속하고 있다. 그는 눈 때문에 하룻밤을 묵었던 집에서 이마에 뿔이 난 소녀를 치료해준 후, 글자로 무시를 봉인하는 아름다운 처녀 탄유(아오이 유우)의 부름을 받고 그녀의 집을 방문한다. 그러나 탄유가 봉인한 무시를 조사하던 깅코는 자신이 무시에게 침식당하게 되는데, 무시가 빙의된 깅코의 운명은 과연 어떻게 될 것인가? 생과 사를 헤매는 그의 예상치 못한 비밀이 지금 밝혀진다.
A mysterious street-painter, Jouji, wanders aimlessly, homeless. Together with his homeless pals, he makes his living by selling his paintings on the street. His paintings, dynamically exploding on pieces of cardboard, catch the eyes of Kyoko, an art dealer. He can feel alive only if he keeps painting, but unable to find something to fill his void inside, he tries to drown himself in alcohol. Drawn to Jouji, Kyoko commissions him to paint for her. The two travel to a secluded mountain-side, and there Jouji becomes inspired both by the natural surroundings and Kyoko herself.
Kenichi is a half-Japanese, half-Chinese man of the underworld. You can sell him anything except children's organs. His domain is in Kabukicho, a gangland controlled by various Shanghai gangs intent on taking control. His former partner-in-crime, Fu-Chun, is rumored to have returned to Kabukicho, having fled years earlier after killing the number two of gangland boss, Yuan. Yuan wants to get even and attempts to do so by using Kenichi.
