Louis-Philippe Fourchaume, another typical lead-role for French comedy superstar Louis de Funès, is the dictatorial CEO of a French company which designs and produces sail yachts, and fires in yet another tantrum his designer André Castagnier, not realizing that man is his only chance to land a vital contract with the Italian magnate Marcello Cacciaperotti. So he has to find him at his extremely rural birthplace in 'la France profonde', which proves a torturous odyssey for the spoiled rich man; when he does get there his torment is far from over: the country bumpkin refuses to resume his slavish position now the shoe is on the other foot, so Fourchaume is dragged along in the boorish family life, and at times unable to control his temper, which may cost him more credit then he painstakingly builds up...

The story of the couple from the very first meeting to break up told from a view of a woman, Francoise. The film shares the same plot with "Jean-Marc ou La vie conjugale", that tells the same story from another perspective.

셀레스틴은 파리에서 내려와, 그 지방 중류 계층의 한 가정에서 하녀로 일한다. 그런데 그 가정이라는게 괴이하기 짝이 없다. 집주인 라부르는 발에 집착하는 괴벽을 가지고 있고, 그의 딸 몽테일 부인은 대부분의 시간을 방에 틀어 박혀 알 수 없는 실험을 하며 보낸다. 거기다 그 남편인 몽테일은 집안에서 일하는 모든 여자를 임신시키는 고약한 습관을 갖고 있다. 집안의 모든 남자들은 성적으로 "경험이 많을" 것으로 생각되는 대도시에 서 온 셀레스틴에게 관심을 갖게 되는데, 거기에는 하인인 조제프도 포함된다.

섬세하고 나약한 지식인인 조셉 케이의 집에 경찰이 들이닥치고 그는 죄목도 밝히지 않은 채 구속된다. 그 뒤 케이는 자신의 무죄 석방을 위해 경찰과 변호사, 법관들, 끝내는 신까지 차례로 만난다. 한편 경찰과 변호사, 법관들도 인간인지라 헛점 투성이였고, 그들이 헛점을 위장하기 위해 허세를 부리는 것을 목격한 케이는 좌절하며 반항한다.

권투에 열정을 품고 있는 빅토르는 체육관을 운영하면서 신인 복서를 발굴한다. 그의 아내 블랑시는 고향인 리비에라 해안으로 돌아갈 것을 꿈꾸며 남편이 목표를 향해 최선을 다하도록 돕는다. 그러던 어느 날, 파리 국유철도공사의 허름한 일꾼인 앙드레와 만난 빅토르는 앙드레가 미래의 챔피언감이라는 것을 한눈에 알아본다. 이제 빅토르는 앙드레를 자신의 집에서 살게 하고서 그를 훈련시키기에 여념이 없다. 한편, 앙드레는 어느 날 기차역에서 아름다운 여인 코린느를 보고 첫눈에 반한다. 우여곡절 끝에 만나게 된 두 사람. 마침내 시합날, 코린느는 경기장 맨 앞줄에 앉아 앙드레를 응원한다. 멋지게 승리를 따낸 앙드레. 하지만 코린느와 헤어져야 함을 알고 상심에 빠진다. 아름다운 코린느와의 사랑을 택할 것인지 아니면 빅토르가 자신에게 열어준 최고의 복서로서의 길을 갈 것인지 방황하는 앙드레. 잔신이 물러나야함을 안 코린느는 파리를 떠나는데.
