Hokkaido, Japan: An old woman -- formerly a man -- lives by a lake in the northern reaches of Japan, gazing at Nakajima Island in its center where her daughter's body was found long ago. She hasn't been able to visit for almost 50 years. Tokyo: A middle-aged man lives on an island where criminals were once exiled in the past, earning a sparse living as a cattle herder. He is descended from such exiled criminals. He raised his only daughter by himself after losing his wife in an accident. In the closing days of World War II, Japanese-American Hiromi, a girl age 16, encounters an American deserter, Bob, and a Japanese soldier, Iwabuchi, living together in a cave on a small island in Okinawa. The two men are deserters from their armies; yet both vow never to harm another human being again. Hiromi looks after the deserters until another soldier appears and the peace of the cave is shattered. It leads to the death of three of them and a fascinating mystery that isn't solved until the present day.

Former high school classmates, now adults, hold jealous thoughts, hidden intentions and lust for revenge. Graduates from a high school have held reunions since they graduated 10 years ago. The high school itself is located 2 hours from Tokyo by train and past reunions were held by different teams for different areas. An upcoming reunion is the first time where everyone will gather again.

Tsukiko, whose father died before she was born, lives with her mother Yoko and they provide mutual support for each other. One day, Yoko comes home completely drunk with Kenji, a young man with blond hair, and tells Tsukiko, "I'm going to marry him."
