월레스 리치(빌 머레이)는 아이오와 주에서 블록버스터 비디오 체인점을 하는 인물인데, 자신의 생일날 런던에서 은행가로 일하는 자신의 동생 제임스(피터 갈래거)를 찾아간다. 그러나 그 날 동생은 중요한 비지니스 파티가 있어 월레스는 할 수 없이 동생이 추천하는 인생 극장이라는 즉흥 연극 프로그램에 출연하게 된다. 인생 극장은 삶의 고단함에 지친 런던 시민들이 일정액의 출연료를 내고 극단에서 연출하는 즉흥 연극에 출연하는 프로그램이다. 하지만 한 통의 전화로 인해 월레스의 연극 출연은 이상한 방향으로 진행되기에 이른다. 월레스는 공중전화 박스에서 극단의 전화를 기다리다가 영국정보국으로부터 이상한 전화를 받는데...

High Fidelity'로 우리에게 알려져 있는 닉 혼비의 자전적인 소설을 바탕으로 영화화 했으며, 축구에 아주 강한 집착을 보이는 한 남자의 이야기다. 닉 혼비는 이 영화에 학교 축구심판으로 잠깐 출연하기도 했다.
