1975년 베트남 전쟁에 참가한 미군 크리스는 클럽 ‘드림랜드’에서 전쟁 고아 킴을 만나 사랑에 빠지고 결혼식을 올린다. 하지만 1978년 호찌민 정부가 들어서고 미군이 급히 철수하게 되면서 크리스는 미국으로 돌아가게 되고 킴은 베트남에 홀로 남겨진 채 아들 탬을 낳게 된다. 한편, 킴의 약혼자였던 투이는 호찌민 정부 위원이 되어 반역자로 몰린 킴을 찾아와 결혼을 강요하지만, 킴이 자신의 청혼을 거절하자 위험한 선택을 하게 되는데
