핵전쟁이 벌어진 위기 상황, 영국 소년들을 안전한 장소로 후송하던 비행기가 적군의 요격을 받아 격추되고, 소년들은 비상 탈출, 무인도에 불시착한다. 이 꼬마 집단은 랠프를 지도자로 선출하고 그의 지휘에 따라 다양한 구조방법을 모색한다. 한편 바닷가에 오두막을 세우자고 제의하는 랠프와 사냥을 강조하는 잭은 사사건건 대립한다. 소라를 쥔 사람이 발언권을 갖도록 하는 규칙을 무시하던 잭은 결국 랠프와 결별하게 된다. 한편 죽은 낙하산병을 잘못 본 꼬마들이 짐승을 보았다고 하자 랠프는 수색대를 조직한다. 잭의 사냥패들은 자기들을 자축하기 위해 춤을 추고 주문을 외운다. 이때 짐승의 정체가 시체임을 알려주기 위해 나타난 사이먼을 죽이고 만다. 잭의 사냥패는 진지를 구축하고 핏기의 안경을 훔친다. 안경이 없어 불을 피울 수 없게 된 랠프 일행은 잭을 찾아가 안경을 돌려 달라고 호소한다. 그 사이 잭과 한패인 로저는 피기에게 바위를 굴려 떨어뜨리고 도망친다. 그러나 이제 흉악해진 사냥패들로 인하여 랠프는 위험한 고비를 맞는다. 몇 번의 위기를 넘기고 바닷가로 나온 소년들은 연기를 보고 섬에 들어 온 영국 해군장교의 구조를 받게 된다.

A title card announces that the film is a result of found footage assembled by cameraman J.J. Burden working for the acclaimed documentary filmmaker Jim Dunn, who has disappeared. Leach, a heroin addict, introduces the audience to his apartment where other heroin addicts, a mix of current and former jazz musicians, are waiting for Cowboy, their drug connection, to appear. Things go out of control as the men grow increasingly nervous and the cameraman keeps recording.
