A remote brick manufacture factory produces bricks in an ancient way. Many families with different ethnicities work in the factory and the boss seems to hold the key to solving their problems. Forty-year-old Lotfollah, who has been born on-site, is the factory supervisor and acts as go-between for the workers and the boss. Boss has Lotfollah gather all the workers in front of his office. He wants to talk to them about the shutdown of the factory. All matters now to Lotfollah is to keep Sarvar unharmed, the woman he has been in love with for a long time.

이란과 이라크의 국경지대에서 칠판을 등에 지고 산을 오르는 리부아르와 싸이드. 이들은 외딴 마을의 학생을 직접 찾아다니는 선생님이다. 배우는 데 뜻이 없는 거친 아이들이 험한 일을 더 고되게 하지만 그들은 쉽게 포기하지 않는다. 산 쪽으로 양치기 소년들을 찾아 나섰던 리부아르는 국경을 넘나들면서 밀수품과 장물을 운반하는 소년들을 만난다. 모두가 그를 경계하지만 그와 이름이 같은 소년 리부아르는 이름을 쓸 수 있게 가르쳐 달라고 부탁한다. 대부분 그를 반기지 않는 아이들과 어색하게 동행하는 가운데 추락사고가 일어나고, 싸이드는 다친 아이를 위해 칠판을 잘라 부목을 만들어준다. 칠판은 반 토막이 나지만 아이들은 이제 조금씩 마음을 열기 시작하고... 마을로 내려간 싸이드는 고향으로 돌아가려고 길을 찾아 헤매는 노인들을 만나게 된다. 노인들을 가르쳐보려 하지만 소용이 없게 되자, 싸이드는 호두 40알을 받고 국경까지 안내를 맡는다. 그는 일행 중, 딸을 시집보내고서야 편히 죽겠다는 한 노인의 소원을 들어주느라 어린 아들을 둔 과부 할랄레와 얼결에 결혼까지 한다. 칠판을 예물로 주고 맞이한 신부, 할랄레에게도 글자와 수학을 가르쳐보려고 하지만 싸이드의 노력은 아무런 반응을 얻지 못하는데...
