Hailing from Rouyn-Noranda, Simon Plouffe lives and works in Montreal, Quebec. His experience as a sound mixer leads him to explore sonic universes both within experimentation and design. His first documentary Others’ Gold (2011), has been shown in fifteen international festivals (RIDM, Dok.Fest, Guadalajara, Big Sky) and has received a Merit Award for Advocacy at Montana CINE Int. Film Fest, an honorable mention for Excellent Storytelling at the WIFF, and the Silver Lei Award at the Honolulu Film Awards. His second feature-length documentary Those Who Come, Will Hear (2018), has won the Iris for Best Documentary Sound in 2019, the Jury Award at the 56th edition of Ann Arbor Film Festival , Best Feature Documentary at the chilean festival Ficwallmapu in 2018. He is currently developing a documentary on blindness caused by armed conflicts as well as a short exploratory documentary on an underwater forest.

When tragedy strikes, the couple find themselves trapped in a near-ghost town whose past secrets begin to bubble back up to the surface. A spine-tingling thriller set way, way out of the city, Fortin’s splendidly crafted first feature, anchored in the Innu community of Matimekush, ventures into an isolated region to set the stage for an authentic encounter between the quintessential city slicker and nature.

With an empathetic ear to both sides, this film delicately unpacks the sensitive subject of ethnic nationalism in the South Caucasus. Using poetic visuals and a mesmerizing, immersive soundscape, Under the Same Sun introduces us to the viewpoints of writers, activists and everyday citizens. Through these interviews, the film raises an urgent and timely question: How does one retain a belief in universal human rights in the face of aggressive propaganda and increasing ethnic nationalism?

The origins and evolution of the Innu Nikamu Music and Aboriginal Arts Festival are intimately linked to the territorial roots of the Innu people and to the life of the Maliotenam Reserve community. For centuries past the Innu had followed a seasonal migration cycle, wintering in the northern territories for the caribou hunt and returning every summer to the north shore of the St-Lawrence. Festivities, meetings, traditional games and weddings marked the latter period, and the Festival has become the modern day reincarnation of the ancient summer celebration.

Traces the lives of the Hartings, a blind Montreal family of three who make their living singing in the city's subway stations. The Hartings lost their only sighted child Hassan in a tragic drowning accident, and have since turned to the teachings of Russian mystic Grigori Grabovoi, hoping to resurrect their son. Resurrecting Hassan is an exploration of this family's legacy of grief, tragedy and abuse; the film will follow them on their path to redemption.

An astronaut sends her young son a video message from outer space. In Mexico, a stripper dances night after night to keep a roof over her child’s head. In Canada, a woman becomes a mother for the first time after enduring seven miscarriages. Finnish filmmaker Joonas Berghäll has travelled to South African settlements, Nepalese terraced fields and Russia’s metropolis Moscow to investigate an unshakable and almost magical connection: the bond between mother and child. MOTHER‘S WISH portrays 10 women from the most varied of cultural and social backgrounds who all tell of the beauty and difficulty of being a mother. These are not only stories of love and pride – but also of disappointed hopes and the most precarious of life circumstances. Above all else, however, the protagonists tell of their determination – regardless of their current living conditions – to fight for a better future.
