샌디(일라이자 우드 분)는 여름을 삼촌 포터(폴 호간 분)와 함께 보내기 위해 '코럴 키'란 섬으로 온다. 그런데 어수선하고 빗물이 새는 삼촌의 바닷가 집에 들어선 순간 샌디는 돌아가고 싶은 마음만 생긴다. 다음날, 삼촌과 함께 배를 타고 바다로로 나간 샌디는 어부들이 돌고래에게 총을 쏘는 것을 목격하고 돌고래 한 마리를 숨겨준다. 어획량이 줄어드는 이유가 스카라고 불리는 망치머리 귀상어 때문이라고 생각한 어부들은 미끼로 고기를 던져놓고 잡으려 하지만, 돌고래가 미끼를 다 먹어버린다고 생각하기 때문이다. 저녁때 집으로 돌아온 샌디가 그 돌고래가 찾아와 재주를 부리는 것을 보고, 친구가 된다. 며칠 후, 갑자기 불어닥친 허리케인으로 삼촌의 집과 배가 부서지자 삼촌은 필요한 장비를 구하기 위해 육지로 떠난다. 부두가를 걷던 샌디는 우연히 그 돌고래와 놀고 있는 소녀 킴을 만나고, 돌고래에게도 플리퍼라는 이름을 지어준다. 샌디와 킴은 플리퍼의 재주를 이용, 간이 돌고래 쇼장을 만드는데 프러퍼는 동전을 찾아내는 묘기를 부리는 등 모두가 즐거운 시간을 보내는데...
