2018년 6월 23일 토요일, 태국 북부에서 한 무리의 청소년 축구단이 연습 후 휴식을 위해 동굴로 놀러 간다. 하지만 화창했던 날씨는 평년보다 일찍 찾아온 우기로 인해 갑작스럽게 폭우로 바뀐다. 동굴 속에 있던 12명의 소년과 코치는 급속하게 불어나는 물로 인해 출구가 막히자 동굴 더 깊은 곳으로 피한다. 국립공원 순찰대가 동굴 입구에 세워진 자전거를 발견하고 비상상황이 전개된다. 태국의 군부대뿐만 아니라 하와이에 있는 미국의 인도-태평양 사령부를 비롯해 영국과 중국 등 전 세계에서 온 다국적 구조대가 구조 캠프로 모여든다. 한시가 급한 상황이지만 수색과 구조 작전에는 여러 가지 어려움이 따른다. 이 모든 역경을 이겨내고 무려 17일간이나 종유석에서 떨어지는 물을 마시며 극한의 스트레스를 견뎌낸 소년들과 코치가 기적적으로 구조된다.
