The Grand Knockout Tournament (colloquially also known as It's a Royal Knockout) was a one-off charity event which was shown on British television on 19 June 1987. It followed the format of It's a Knockout (the British version of Jeux Sans Frontieres), a slapstick TV gameshow which was broadcast in the UK until 1982. The event was staged on the lakeside lawn of the Alton Towers stately home-cum-theme park. However, the event used its own specially created immersing set, meaning that the location was not very recognisable in the TV broadcast.

The event, for which ticket-buyers payed up to $1,000 a seat (tax-deductible as a contribution to the Actors' Fund) was billed as "The Night of 100 Stars" but, actually, around 230 stars took part. And most of the audience of 5,800 had no idea in advance that they were paying to see a TV taping, complete with long waits for set and costume changes, tape rewinding, and the like. Executive producer Alexander Cohen estimated that the 5,800 Radio City Music Hall seats sold out at prices ranging from $25 to $1,000. The show itself cost about $4 million to produce and was expected to yield around $2 million for the new addition to the Actors Fund retirement home in Englewood, N. J. ABC is reputed to have paid more than $5 million for the television rights.

크립톤 행성의 조엘(Jor-El: 마론 브란도 분)은 행성이 곧 폭발할 것이라는 사실을 알고, 수많은 은하계의 지식을 담은 푸른 수정과 함께 아들인 카렐(Baby Clark Kent: 아론 스모린스키 분)을 지구로 보낸다. 카렐이 타고 온 작은 우주선은 조나단 부부(Jonathan Kent: 글렌 포드 분 / Ma Kent: 필리스 색터 분) 앞에 떨어지고, 아이가 없던 그들이 카렐을 데려와 클락이라 부르며 키운다. 어느 덧 청년으로 성장한 클락(Clark Kent/Superman: 크리스토퍼 리브 분)은 알지못하는 힘에 끌려 북쪽으로 가게 되고, 그 곳에서 아버지 조엘로부터 그 동안의 궁금증을 풀고, 다시 지구로 돌아오게 된다. 지구로 돌아온 클락은 데일리 플리닛지의 기자로 살아가며, 위험한 순간마다 슈퍼맨으로 변신해 사람들을 구해낸다. 슈퍼맨의 활약이 커지면서 신문사마다 다투어 그의 기사를 실었고 클락은 같은 신문사의 여기자 로이스 레인(Lois Lane: 마곳 키더 분)을 짝사랑하게 되는데.

원자력 잠수함이 고장난 화물선과의 충돌로 심해에 침몰하게 된다. 통신두절과 낙석들로 인해 승무원들의 불안과 공포는 극에 달하고,수압을 견디지 못하는 잠수함의 위기가 더해 갈 수록, 절박한 상황에서 울부짖는 승무원들의 공포가 커져만가고.
