전직보안관 후커와 도박사 피스크 그리고 총잡이 테일러등 세 서부사나이는 미모의 부인 리아로부터 금광에 묻힌 남편을 구해주면 사례를 하겠다는 제의에 응한다. 그들은 이 여행이 매우 위험하고 오래 걸릴 거라는 걸 알았지만 거절하기엔 사례금이 너무 매혹적이었다. 악의 화원이라 불리는 인디언 지역에서 그들은 리아의 남편을 구하나 그가 다시 금광으로 돌아오다 인디언의 활에 맞아 죽는다. 험준한 산길에서 인디언의 습격을 받게 되자 피스크는 부인을 데리고 떠나라 하지만 서로 남겠다고 한다. 결국 제비를 뽑아 피스크는 남게 되고 후커는 부인을 데리고 떠난다.

매튜 콜더는 잃어버렸던 9살난 어린 아들을 찾아 서부의 한 작은 마을로 찾아온다. 그곳은 금광을 찾기 위해 몰려든 사람들로 붐비고 있었다. 매튜는 술집에서 술 심부름을 하고 있는 아들, 마크를 찾아 함께 산으로 가 농사를 짓고 살기로 한다. 한편, 이 마을 선술집에서 노래를 하며 살아가던 케이는 자신의 애인이자 도박꾼인 해리 웨스턴이 도박판에서 금광 소유권을 따내자 소유권 등록을 하기 위해 함께 '카운슬시'로 떠난다. 그러나 케이와 웨스턴은 급류에 휩싸이게 되고 이 광경을 본 매튜가 두 사람을 구해준다. 위기에서 가까스로 살아난 웨스턴은 매튜에게 말과 총을 빌려줄 것을 요구하지만 매튜는 인디언이 언제 공격해올지 모르는 상황이기 때문에 빌려줄 수 없다고 거절한다. 결국 웨스턴은 무력으로 매튜를 때려눕히고 총과 말을 빼앗은 뒤 혼자 카운슬시로 떠난다. 매튜는 곧 의식을 회복하지만 매튜에게 무기가 없는 걸 눈치챈 인디언들이 땅과 농토를 빼앗기 위해 이들을 공격해 온다. 위기에 처한 매튜와 그의 아들 마크, 그리고 케이는 하는 수없이 뗏목을 타고 웨스턴을 찾아 카운슬시로 떠난다. '돌아오지 않는 강'이란 별명이 붙어있을 만큼 물살이 거세고 위험한 강을 따라 세 사람의 여행이 시작되고. 매튜와 케이는 아옹다옹 싸움을 하는 가운데 어느덧 서로에 대한 사랑의 감정이 싹튼다. 온갖 역경을 극복하고 마침내 카운슬시에 도착한 세 사람. 케이는 웨스턴을 만나 매튜에게 사과할 것을 부탁하지만 웨스턴은 매튜에게 총을 겨누며 위협한다. 한편 이 광경을 보고 있던 마크는 아버지를 구하기 위해 웨스턴을 총으로 쏴 죽인다. 자신이 사랑했던 사람은 매튜라는 사실을 깨달은 케이. 그녀가 '돌아오지 않는 강'이란 노래를 부르며 자신을 떠난 매튜를 그리워하고 있을 때, 매튜가 살롱으로 그녀를 찾아온다. 매튜와 마크, 그리고 케이 세 사람은 새 삶을 찾아 떠난다.
