'돌아오지 않는 강'이란 별명이 붙어있을 만큼 물살이 거세고 위험한 강을 따라 세 사람의 여행이 시작되고. 매튜와 케이는 아옹다옹 싸움을 하는 가운데 어느덧 서로에 대한 사랑의 감정이 싹튼다. 온갖 역경을 극복하고 마침내 카운슬시에 도착한 세 사람. 케이는 웨스턴을 만나 매튜에게 사과할 것을 부탁하지만 웨스턴은 매튜에게 총을 겨누며 위협한다. 한편 이 광경을 보고 있던 마크는 아버지를 구하기 위해 웨스턴을 총으로 쏴 죽인다. 자신이 사랑했던 사람은 매튜라는 사실을 깨달은 케이. 그녀가 '돌아오지 않는 강'이란 노래를 부르며 자신을 떠난 매튜를 그리워하고 있을 때, 매튜가 살롱으로 그녀를 찾아온다. 매튜와 마크, 그리고 케이 세 사람은 새 삶을 찾아 떠난다.

T박사는 수백 명의 아이들을 납치해 끊임없이 피아노 연습을 강요한다. 다른 악기를 연주하다가 잡힌 사람은 누구든 무시무시한 지하 감옥에 던져져 고통을 받게 된다. 바트는 두려움에 사로잡히지만 분연히 일어나 T 박사를 저지하고 점점 더 초현실적인 세계로 빠져든다. 하지만 다행스럽게도 바트의 영웅인 다정한 배관공이 나타나 바트를 도와주는데...
