아들이 모든 문화적 여유를 누리기를 바라는 자상한 엄마의 권유에 따라 피아노 레슨을 받고 있는 바트(토미 레티그)는 피아노 연주보다는 야구를 좋아하고, 엄마를 좋아하는 다정한 배관공 자블라도우스키(피터 린드 헤이즈)를 도우면서 시간 보내기를 좋아한다. 그는 연습을 강요하는 피아노 선생은 끔찍하게 싫어하지만 선생에게 하고 싶은 것을 마음 속으로만 상상하면서 묵묵히 레슨을 참아낸다. 어느날 잠자리에 든 바트는 거대하고 무시무시한 T 박사(한스 콘리드)가 지배하는 끔찍한 세계로 가는 악몽을 꾸게 된다.
