참전을 눈앞에 둔 1914년의 이탈리아. 카프리섬의 순박한 양치기 소녀 루치아는 카프리에서 이상향을 만들고자 하는 코뮨과 가까워지며 자유와 주체성에 눈을 뜨기 시작한다. 아름다운 카프리의 풍광을 배경으로 중견거장 마리오 마르토네의 카메라에 담긴 20세기 초 격동의 이탈리아.

사랑과 결혼을 다룬 이야기이다. 50살이 된 니넬라는 사랑에 대한 환상을 아직도 가지고 있었다. 왜냐면 젊은 시절 사랑하던 사람과 결혼을 못했기 때문이다. 그런데 그들에게 새로운 운명적인 만남이 생기는데, 그녀의 딸과 옛 애인의 아들이 풀리아에서 결혼하게 되었고, 풀리냐노 해안가에서 불가능한 일이 실현되게 된다.

Fulvio is the only one of the three brothers to have left the village to go to work in the city. Deputy chief of staff in a large company, he dismisses people without remorse until he gets fired himself and after being jailed for beating his superior, is entrusted to his brother, who's a pastor in the village where they grew up. Forced into a place far from the modern world, Fulvio decides to help the local church in crisis by inventing a miracle that makes everyone believe that the saint's statue weeps. Tourists and pilgrims rush to the village and are filling the pockets of local businesses until the Vatican decides to send someone to certify the event. Fulvio must confess the scam, but the entire village will rise to convince the envoys of the Holy City for the veracity of the invented miracle.

서정적인 선율 속에서 뛰어다니는 세 남매를 보여주며 시작되는 이 영화는 19세기 이탈리아의 대표적인 낭만주의 시인 자코모 레오파르디의 삶을 소재로 한다. 엄격한 아버지의 교육 현장을 반영하는 초반부는 시대상을그대로 재현한 그림 같은 샷들로 구성되며, 전체적으로 19세기의 텍스처를 그대로 살린 실내 조명과 색감은 숭고미를 자아낼 정도로 감동적이다. 구속된 삶을 살았던 고향 레카나티에서부터 실연을 겪는 피렌체, 마지막 거처였던 나폴리에 이르기까지 실제 시인의 여정을 따라가다 보면 신체적 결함으로 인해 사랑과 동시에 죽음을 떠올려야만 했던 그의 시 세계에 한 발짝 더 가까이 다가갈 수 있다. 레오파르디 역의 엘리오 제르마노의 연기는 그야말로 타의 추종을 불허하며, 시를 읊으며 대단원을 장식하는 마지막 샷은 형언하기 힘든 감동을 준다. 모든 도서관 장면들은 실제 레오파르디가 작업했던 곳에서 촬영되었다고 한다. 워털루 싸움에서 패배하고 세인트 헬레나 섬에서 죽은 나폴레옹은 사실은 가짜, 진짜는 다시 왕위에 오르기 위해 빈민으로 변장하고 섬을 탈출하여 파리로 향한다. 그런데 탈출하는 배 안에서 나폴레옹이라는 것을 모르는 선원들이 심하게 그를 부려먹는다. 게다가 겨우 상륙한 곳은 프랑스가 아니라, 회한의 땅 벨기에의 워털루였다. 어쩔 수 없이 다시 파리로 가지만 가난한 백성으로 변장한 그는 이 후 다양한 시련을 겪게 되는데...

Although liberated from Auschwitz on January 27, 1945, Levi did not reach Turin until October 19 of that year. After spending some time in a Soviet camp for former concentration camp inmates, he embarked on an arduous journey home in the company of Italian former prisoners of war from the Italian Army in Russia. His long railway journey home to Turin took him on a circuitous route from Poland, through Russia, Romania, Hungary, Austria and Germany.
