마사야는 삼류 대학에 다니며 의기소침한 나날을 보내고 있다. 어느 날, 그는 기소된 24개의 죄목 중 9개의 살인죄로 사형 선고를 받고 복역 중인 연쇄살인범인 야마토로부터 편지를 받게 되는데, 그는 체포되기 전에 마사야가 중학교 때 자주 갔던 빵집의 주인이었다. 야마토는 자신의 죄를 인정하면서도, 아홉 번째 판결은 함정에 빠진 것이라며 진짜 살인자를 찾아달라고 마사야에게 부탁한다. 마사야가 사건을 파헤칠수록 상상을 뛰어넘는 잔인한 진실이 드러난다.
