미국 텍사스주 휴스턴에 있는 녹스 석유사는 대규모 석유 정유 공장부지 및 저장지를 찾고 있던 중 북스코트랜드의 퍼네스만을 점찍게 된다. 사원인 맥켄타이어(Mac MacIntyre: 피터 리거트 분)가 그곳에 교섭자로 파견이 되고 녹스사의 영국 아버딘 지점의 사원인 올슨(Danny Oldsen: 피터 카팰디 분)과 함께 계약 체결에 나선다. 퍼넥스 마을은 작은 어촌으로 사람들 모두가 순박하고 세상물정을 모른다. 맥은 호텔 주인겸 회계사로 일하고 있는 어커트(Gordon Urquhart: 데니스 로슨 분)와 이틀간의 계약을 하면서 차츰 아름답고 때묻지 않은 이 마을에 정이 들게 된다. 결국 훌륭한 조건으로 계약이 체결되려고 할즈음 녹스사 회장인 해퍼(Felix Happer: 버트 랭카스터 분)가 직접온다. 건망증이 심하고 별에 대해 관심이 많은 회장은 이곳 경치와 분위기에 매료되는데 결국 석유 정유지 및 저장지 계획을 취소하고 대신 그곳에 천체 관상대와 해저 연구소를 지울것을 다짐한다. 주인공 맥켄타이어는 다시 휴스턴으로 돌아오지만 퍼네스 마을의 따뜻한 정과 아름다움을 못잊어 한다.

페이버 대학은 모범생들의 모임인 오메가 동아리와 문제아 집단인 델타 동아리가 있다. 신입생 래리와 켄트는 오메가의 모임에 참석하였으나, 촌스럽다는 이유로 그들의 따돌림을 받는다. 형이 델타회원이었던 켄트는 래리를 데리고 델타에 가입한다. 대학총장은 최악의 동아리인 델타를 해체시키고, 그 회원들마저 퇴학시키기 위해 오메가 회장인 에릭에게 음모를 꾸미도록 지시한다. 한편 델타 회원들은 그런 사실을 전혀 모른채 매일밤 술에 쩔어 문제를 일으키는데…
