The series will take the audience on a sentimental journey to the good old days and once again look at the expansive epic costume dramas and huangmei operas in which actresses played both the male and female roles. Rare interviews with Sir Run Run Shaw, stars Ivy Ling Po, Shaw Yin Yin, Tanny Tie Ni and Cheng Pei Pei are also featured.

Director Lau Ka Leung (who helmed The 36th Chamber of Shaolin) joins in, sharing his thoughts on how certain cinematic technologies have improved martial arts films and expanded their appeal.

청나라 때 만주족의 차별 대우로 불만을 가진 한족들에게 방세옥이 나타난다. 청나라때 청나라를 일으킨 만주족들은 한족들을 차별 대우하였고, 이로써 두 민족간에 갈등이 있었다. 광동에 한인들의 집단인 광농회관이 있었다. 그 회관의 제자 중에 방세옥이라는 아이가 있었는데 어려서부터 엄마로부터 무술을 배워 단단한 체격을 갖고 있엇으나 자신의 주먹만 믿고 우쭐대기를 좋아하고 오만방자하여 불의를 보면 앞뒤를 가리지 못하는 아이였다. 그는 늘 만주인에 불만을 품었고 특히 연무대에서 만주인을 때려 눕혀 이름을 떨쳤다. 어느날 방세옥은 만주인으로 오해하고 만주인 무거인화관에 뛰어들어 소란을 피운다. 이 사건으로 만주인은 방세옥을 죽이려 하나 그의 엄마는 그를 소림사로 피난 시켜 방세옥은 삼덕 스님의 제자로 들어가게 된다. 소림사에 피난한 세옥은 자중하지 못하고 소림사를 빠져나와 만주인 재독과 어울린다. 세옥은 자신이 한인을 위해 큰 일을 할 수 있다고 생각하지만 재독은 세옥을 이용하여 소림사를 파멸시키려 하고 있었다. 재독은 세옥을 이용하여 소림사 36명의 제자들을 초대해서 죽일 음모를 꾸몄으니, 위기의 순간 삼덕스님이 나타나 제자들을 구하게 된다.

홍가권(洪家拳)의 창시자인 홍희관의 아들 '홍문정(유가휘 분)' 은 우아표와 함께 명나라의 재건을 위해 힘쓰는데, 백련교가 이를 방해한다. 그러자 홍문정과 우아표는 서로의 호, 학 권법을 합쳐 호학쌍형권으로 백련교주의 동생 백미자를 무찌른다.
이에 분개한 백련교주(나열 분)는 홍문정 일파를 습격하고 급소가 없는 백련교주에겐 호학쌍형권이 통하지 않는다.
결국 학권을 맡은 우아표가 백련교주에게 죽임을 당하고 홍문정과 우아표의 처(혜영홍 분)는 가까스로 도망을 쳐 우아표의 옛 지기의 종이공장으로 피신하게 된다. 그 곳에서 홍문정은 호학쌍형권을 연마하며 백련교주를 무찌르고자 노력하지만 번번히 깨지고 만다. 이에 우아표의 처는 백련교주를 무찌르기 위해선 권법에 여성과 같은 부드러움이 가미되어야 한다며 부드러운 권법을 전수한다.
이를 수련한 문정은 자신의 권법에 큰 진전이 있음을 알고 백련교주를 찾아가지만 큰 부상을 입어 죽을 위기에 처하고 만다.
문정은 종이공장장의 침술로 겨우 소생하고 공장장으로부터 받은 침술서를 통해 혈도술을 익힌다. 혈도술과 호학쌍형권, 그리고 여성의 무술을 익힌 문정은 백련교주를 향해 다시 찾아간다.

원응비는 마을 사람들로부터 존경을 받는 명사이자 금도의 달인이기도 했다. 그러나 자랑할 기회가 거의 없어 언제나 괴로운 나날을 보내고 있다. 그래서 그는 권법가들을 집으로 초대하고 진검 승부 끝에 죽임으로써 허전함을 달래고 있었다. 한편 하비,·풍가금,·증초는 가난한 쿵후의 달인 삼인조이다. 이들은 매일 먹기도 어려운 생활을 했고, 언젠가는 극빈 생활에서 벗어나고 싶다는 생각을 하고 있었다. 그러나 자랑할 것이라고는 몸뚱아리밖에 없는 그들은 이러지도 저러지도 못하고 있었다. 어느 날 가난한 삼인조는 원응비의 마을을 찾아 식비를 조달한다고 가보인 검을 전당잡힌다. 그 검은 원응비의 손에 들어갔다가 그 훌륭함에 눈을 떼지 못한다. 이때 가난한 삼인조는 자신들을 도왔던 역시 가난한 달인 양추풍과 재회한다. 그들과 접촉한 원응비는 "의식주를 보장하니까 나에게 오라"는 말을 한다. 그들을 집에 초대하고 화려한 대접을 하는 원응비, 그러나 그의 목적은 따로 있었다. 이 거리에는 원응비와 대립 관계에 있는 관운이라는 망나니가 있었다. 원응비는 그들을 서로 싸우게 하여 장애물을 제거하려고 했다. 그러나 서로 싸우다 그들끼리 우정이 맺어진다. 그러자 원응비는 양추풍의 곤봉을 폭약이 든 것으로 바꿈으로써 마침내 관운의 말살에 성공한다. 갑자기 무기에서 불을 뿜은 양추풍은 삼인조에게서 버려진다. 이어 원응비는 증초와 풍가금을 살해한다. 살아남은 하비는 양추풍과 합류한 후 원응비의 부하에게서 진실을 알아내고 동료의 복수를 맹세한다. 하지만 원응비의 금도는 강력해서 도저히 이길 수 있는 상대가 아니었다. 과거 원응비의 수하였던 남자에게서 "원응비의 기술에는 규칙성이 있다"는 조언을 받고 공략의 실마리를 찾아 간다. 특별 훈련을 쌓은 두 사람은 원응비의 집에서 마지막 싸움에 도전하는데...

광동에서 도둑질을 하며 소일을 하는 허군보는 우연히 관부의 보물을 턴 강도들을 혼내주고 그 보물로 해상술집에서 거부 보석상행세를 하며 기생들과 유희를 즐긴다. 이때 반대편에서 북경에서 온 보석상인 왕천명이라는 사람과 자존심대결을 하게 되고 급기야 왕천명에게 싸움을 건다. 이 소동으로 관군이 몰려오는데 왕천명이 증명서를 보이자 관군은 쩔쩔매는데, 왕천명의 신분은 바로 11왕야이다. 그는 명주와 골동품 그리고 무공을 좋아해 자주 변복을 하고 유람하는 것을 좋아하는 사람이다. 허군보는 왕천명의 신분을 모른 채 자신이 도둑질한 보물을 찾으려고 애쓰다가 무공을 숨긴 왕천명이 기생인 소홍 (혜영홍)을 이용해 허군보를 굴복시키고 심지어 허군보를 제자로 삼는다. 이때 황권을 노린 4황자는 자객을 보내 11황자를 죽이려하고, 11황자도 큰 부상을 입는다. 허군보가 진심으로 간호하자 감동한 11황자는 그에게 무영각을 전수해주고 허군보의 수행 하에 황궁으로 향한다.
