어색한 특수효과 탓에 무서워야할 개미가 인형같아 보이지만 그래도 당시로서는 매우 충격적이었다. 원폭 이후의 시대상을 반영한 이 영화를 적나라한 '안티 커뮤니즘(개미=공산당)'으로 읽는 이도 있다. 1954년 워너 작품 중 최고의 흥행을 기록한 영화이지만 , 등장하는 개미 인형 중 제대로 만들어진 것은 단 두 개 뿐이고 나머지는 움직이지도 않는 것이었다.
