타타르 제국의 침략을 받은 15세기 러시아의 수도사 안드레이, 다닐, 키릴은 일을 찾아 수도원을 떠나는데, 떠돌아다니던 그들은 전쟁과 약탈, 강간과 살인 등 참혹한 현실과 만난다. 그들은 마침내 성상화의 대가 테오판을 만나게 되고, 테오판은 우직한 안드레이를 제자로 선택한다. 그러나 안드레이는 수도원 밖의 현실, 용서와 구원에 대한 내적 갈등으로 더 이상 벽화를 그릴 수가 없다. 격정의 15세기 미술계의 아이콘이었던 안드레이 루블로프의 삶을 그린 영화. ‘삼위일체’로 유명한 15세기의 성상화가 안드레이 루블료프의 인생과 고뇌를 그린 타르코프스키의 두 번째 장편으로, 9개의 에피소드가 연결된 프레스코 구조를 지닌다. 역사의 기록에만 몰두하며 순수 예술가로 남을 것인지 아니면 정치와 시류의 흐름을 쫓아 갈 것인지를 두고 고민하는 종교화가의 안드레이 루블로프의 고뇌를 통해 예술의 본질 탐구와 동시에 당시의 사회상을 꼬집은 수작으로, 침략 전쟁, 기아, 질병에 고통받는 러시아 민중의 삶을 배경으로 '예술이란 무엇이며, 무엇을 해야 하는가?'를 묻고 있는 이 영화는 안드레이 타르콥스키의 작품 중 가장 '역사'에 가깝게 다가서고 있다. 여러 개의 에피소드들이 느슨하게 연결되어 있는 '프레스코' 구조를 지니고 있으며, 마치 거대한 프레스코 벽화를 보는 듯한 웅장한 느낌을 준다. 안드레이 타르코프스키는 의 감독 콘찰로프스키와 사석에서 대화하던 중에 신비의 베일에 싸여있던 15세기의 성상 화가 루블레프에 매력을 느껴 영화화할 것을 결심했다고 전한다. 공개 당시 당국의 정책을 비판했다는 이유로 상영이 금지되기도 했다.

리노의 카지노에서 삼류 가수로 일하는 들로리스는 우연히 암흑가의 거물인 빈스의 범죄 현장을 목격한다. 잡히기만 하면 당장 목이 비틀릴 이 꾀꼬리는 그 순간부터 쫓기는 신세가 된다. 경찰에 신고한 들로리스는 증인이 될 것을 약속하고 보호를 받는데, 경찰에서는 그 누구도 상상할 수 없는 곳, 외부와 단절된 수녀원에 들로리스를 숨긴다. 하지만 들로리스는 이렇게 답답한 곳에서 지내느니 차라리 밖에서 쫓기다 총에 맞는게 훨씬 속편한 심정이다. 결국 엄격하기 그지없는 원장 수녀의 감시 아래서 들로리스는 은신이라기 보다는 감화소에 들어온 심정으로 매일 매일을 말썽으로 채우고 있는데, 어느날 그녀의 손에 성가대의 지휘봉이 넘겨졌고, 결국 성가대와 수녀원 전체, 아니 카톨릭 전체가 뒤바뀌는 운명에 이른다!

라스베가스 최고의 인기 가수가 된 들로리스에게 어느 날 수녀님들이 찾아와 도움을 청한다. 자신들이 선생으로 있는 학교의 아이들에게 음악을 가르쳐 달라는 것. 옛 정 때문에 할 수 없이 다시 수녀복을 입게 된 들로리스는 초반부터 못 말리는 문제아들에게 골탕을 먹고 두 손을 들고 만다. 그러나 우연히 학교의 이사가 학교를 폐쇄하려고 한다는 사실을 알게 된 들로리스는 다른 수녀님들과 힘을 합해 학교를 살리기로 마음먹고 특유의 끼를 발동한다. 아이들이 모두 음악에 소질이 있다는 걸 발견한 들로리스는 합창단을 만드는데, 처음에는 적대적이었던 학생들도 자신들의 숨은 재능을 발견해내고 희망을 갖게해 준 들로리스에게 마음을 열기 시작한다. 들로리스와 수녀님들은 합창대회에 참가해서 좋은 성적을 거두면 아이들에게도 자신감이 생기고 학교를 살리는데도 도움이 될 거라는 생각에 대회 참가를 추진하는데, 막상 대회가 열리는 날 들로리스가 클럽 가수라는 걸 알게 된 이사장과 교장은 합창단의 참가를 저지하러 출동한다. 한편 학생들은 다른 팀의 공연을 본 후 지레 겁을 먹고 포기하려하고, 들로리스는 아이들에게 용기를 불어넣어준다. 결국 아이들은 멋진 공연을 펼쳐 우승하고 학교의 폐교결정도 취소된다. 피날레를 장식하는 화려한 공연, "오 해피데이"와 찬송가 "기뻐하며 경배하세"를 비롯해 여러 귀에 익은 곡들이 어깨를 들썩이게 한다.

정치적 혼란기인 원조말. 지방을 관활하던 태감들은 폭정으로 백성을 괴롭히고 있었다. 어릴적 부터 함께 자란 군보와 천보는 무술에서도 뛰어난 실력을 발휘하게 되지만 무술대회에서 천보가 일으킨 사고로 둘은 속세로 떠난다. 어느날 궁지에 처한 추설과 동아를 만난 인연으로 두사람은 반군 불소루 사람들과 가깝게 지내게 된다. 이후 명예욕과 권력욕에 눈멀어 관병이 된 천보는 불소루 사람들과 군보를 배신하게 되고 태감 유당의 근거지로 쳐들어가던 사람들은 결국 천보의 배신으로 목숨을 잃게되고 군보는 그 충격으로 정신 이상자가 된다. 그러나 추설의 지극한 정성과 간호로 마침내 충격과 슬픔을 극복한 군보는 자연의 신비속에서 우주만물의 진리 태극을 깨우치게 된다. 마침내 두 사람간의 일대 혈투가 벌어지고 천보는 결국 군보의 손에 의해 죽게된다. 한바탕 혈투가 끝난후 군보는 인간들의 싸움이 모두 그릇된 욕망에서 비롯된 것이라 깨닫고 태극권을 대대로 전수시킬 것을 결심한다. 이후 군보는 이름을 장삼풍이라 개명하고 백성으로 하여금 태극권을 익혀 심신을 수양케 할 것을 목적으로 무당산에 입산, 태극권을 전파하는데 일생을 바친다.
