베를린영화제 은곰상을 수상한 <로열 어페어>(2012) 이후 십여 년 만에 니콜라이 아르셀 감독과 매즈 미켈슨이 의기투합해 또 하나의 대서사극을 완성했다. 18세기 중반, 루드빅 칼렌 대위는 덴마크 국왕의 숙원사업인 황무지 개간에 앞장서겠다는 포부를 밝힌다. 궁정의 귀족들은 그를 천출이라 폄하하고, 이웃한 영지를 다스리는 지주는 그를 쫓아내기 위해 수단과 방법을 가리지 않으며, 이주한 농민들은 그가 딸처럼 키우는 검은 피부의 소녀를 경계한다. 신의 시험과 고난을 끝없이 겪어야 했던 욥처럼, 칼렌 대위의 삶은 황무지가 선사하는 혼란과 고통으로 점철되어 있다. 그는 메마른 대지를 멋지게 정복하는 웨스턴 히어로가 아니다. 왕이 하사한 땅에 ‘왕의 집’을 세우고 감자 한 그루를 싹 틔우려는 욕심과 그 과정에서 희생되는 이들을 향한 윤리적 책임감 사이에서 고뇌하는 인물일 뿐이다. 이처럼 선악의 경계에서 갈등하는 주인공을 표현하는 데 매즈 미켈슨 같은 적임자가 또 있을까? 실존 인물의 실화에 기반하고 있으나, 감독이 재창조한 것으로 보이는 여성 캐릭터들의 존재가 주인공의 선택과 행동에 미치는 영향은 결코 가볍지 않다.

Waleed (40) lives in Haifa with his wife and children and dreams of a writing career while suffering from chronic depression. He develops a close relationship with his neighbor (a small-time crook) with an ulterior plot in mind. While the scheme turns into an unexpected friendship between the two men, it leads them into a journey of dark encounters.

The bleakness of Antarctica is a fallacy. The ice continent is full of life and offers a biodiversity of which only about two percent are known. Much of it is under water and could determine the future of human beings. When the northern lights cover the ice landscape in summer, the animals in the Antarctic are in a paradisiacal state. Whales blow their fountains in the sky, penguins fly like small rockets into the water, seals dive for crabs under the glittering ice floes. From the bay of the Ross Sea to the ice shelf, from the huge penguin colonies to steaming volcanoes, a life in rhythm with the ice. But the consequences of climate change are slowly becoming apparent here too. While some species are dying, others are spreading. They could bring new viruses and bacteria with them, and new dangers for humans too. The structure of nature has gotten off course. How many generations will still be able to experience the magic of Antarctica?

The 1980s of the GDR – Frank’s puppeteer group is arrested for distributing pacifist leaflets. After being sentenced to imprisonment, the defendants are offered the opportunity to go to the West through a secret buy-out of political prisoners. Frank remains. The same goes for the question of who betrayed them? Different truths and memories stand side by side. The focus is on a person who never tries to act from an attitude of victimization and who depicts his very personal way of dealing with the GDR dictatorship.
