1990년대 알제리를 배경으로 한 영화는 열 여덟 살의 패션 디자이너 지망생 나지마가 알제리 내전 상황에 아랑곳하지 않고 자신의 삶을 이끌어나가는 모습을 그린다. 나지마는 친구 와실라와 밤문화를 즐기기도 하며 세계 다른 곳의 십대와 별반 다르지 않은 생활을 한다. 사회 분위기가 더 보수적이 되면서 전통적 관습에 반하는 행동을 금하는 규정이 생겨나고, 그에 순응할 수 없는 나지마는 자신의 자유를 지키려면 맞서 싸워야 하는 상황에 처한다. 그녀가 준비하는 패션 쇼는 개인의 꿈을 향한 여정인 동시에 사회에 맞서 외치는 여성의 목소리다.
