Maya is a photographer. She takes photos related to the eyeball. Kunio is a neurosurgeon and an independent documentary film director. He is interested on making a documentary about Maya. A mysterious eyeball collector watches for Maya's own eyeballs.

“Hana-Dama”—a flower in the wasteland. This flower is a symbol of earthly desires and every human is overwhelmed by desire and their rationality collapses wherever the flower is in bloom. And even today, the “Hana-Dama” continues to blossom profusely somewhere in the world. The story is set in a film theater, the facility keeps on closing one after another during recent years. The last day has come to a film theater which has been maintained by a film-loving owner, the staff, and their unique audiences. The symbol of human desire, “Hana-Dama,” blossoms at the theater and instigates people’s erratic behavior. Upon facing its closure, tremendous chaos that will be noted in the history of Japanese film takes place within this film theater.

수도원에서 자라 세상에 때 묻는 일 없었던 순수한 여자 프란체스코. 성인이 되어 사회에 나왔지만 어째서 남녀가 사귀고 잠자리를 하는 것인지 이해할 수 없어 의문만 가득한 그녀다. 그러던 어느 날, 프란체스코의 ‘그곳’에 처음 보는 얼굴이 자라난다(?) 그렇게 자신을 '코가'라 칭하는 얼굴과의 기묘한 공생이 시작되는데...

엄청난 재앙을 겪고 모든 것이 사라진 뒤, 남는 것이 ‘희망’ 뿐이라면, 과연 무엇이 ‘희망’일 수 있는가? 소노 시온의 는 아무런 희망이 없는 곳에서 ‘희망’을 찾는 이야기를 그리고 있다. 나가시마현의 오하라 마을. 목축업을 하는 요이치는 아내 이즈미,그리고 부모님과 함께 살고 있다. 어느 날, 대지진이 발생하고 인근의 원자력발전소가 파괴되면서 방사능이 누출된다. 정부는 경계선을 그어 방사능의 영향권에 있는 지역 주민들에게 대피령을 내린다. 요이치의 집은 경계선의 중간에 위치해 있다. 하지만 요이치의 아버지는 치매에 걸린 어머니와 그곳에 남기로 한다. 그리고 그들은 완전히 고립된 삶을 산다. 그런데 안전지역으로 이주한 요이치 부부는 불안한 삶을 이어가는 반면 아버지와 어머니는 평온하기 그지없다. 하지만 사람들이 완전히 사라진 오하라 마을의 그로테스크한 모습은 마치 종말 이후의 지구의 모습을 보는 듯 하다. 그래서, 그들이 찾는 것은 사실 ‘희망’이 아니라 ‘위안’이다. 즉, ‘같이 있다는 것’ 그리고 ‘같이 죽는다는 것’이 그것이다. 영화제목 는 너무나 역설적이다.
