The story takes place over a 24 hour period. In the southernmost part of Japan, 20 fishing boats of an unknown nationality suddenly fire upon and occupy parts of the Hateruma archipelago. Members of the Japan Coast Guard are detained. Under the extremely tense situation, the Japanese government sends Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and an escort fleet to the area. Ryota Akitsu is the captain of the Aircraft Carrier Ibuki and Toshiya Niinami is second-in-command. It is now 6:23 am. and Japan faces one day which they never have before.

At Sakurada Gate in 1860, the shogun’s chief minister and his retinue of bodyguards are ambushed and annihilated. Bearing the responsibility and shame for this failure is Shimura Kingo, master swordsman and chief of the guard. Forbidden to take his own life in atonement, he is instead tasked with hunting down the remaining assassins; however, fate intervenes and now only one is left. Devoted to his late lord and his duty, he relentlessly pursues the sole remaining assassin for the next thirteen years. But times are changing in Japan and the way of the sword has become outlawed. What does this mean for Kingo?

2011년 12월 23일 일본에서 개봉된 화제작이다. 야마모토 제독이 등장하는 태평양 전쟁사를 영화화한 것이 이번이 처음은 아니지만, 전작들이 미니어쳐를 이용한 특촬 기술을 쓴 것에 비하여 본작에서는 현재 일본 영화계가 가진 CG 기술을 총동원해 만들어졌다고 하며, 극우 영화 "남자들의 야마토(男たちの大和 : 2005)" 보다 진일보된 전투 씬들을 보여주고 있다. 이 영화는 일본인의 시각에서 쓴 근대 역사서 "쇼와사(昭和史)"를 집필했던 한도 카츠토시(半藤一利)의 감수에 의해 당시 일본 해군 그 자체라고 할 연합함대 사령장관 야마모토 이소로쿠 제독의 이야기를 영상화한 전쟁 영화로, 감독은 2011년에 일본에서 화제작으로 떠올랐던 "8일째 매미(八日目の蝉 : 2011)"에서 메가폰을 잡았던 나루시마 이즈루(成島出)가 맡았으며, 주연인 야마모토 제독은 극우 영화 "로렐라이(ロ-レライ : 2005)"에서 함장 역을 맡았던 야쿠쇼 코지(役所広司)가 분해 만들어졌다. 출연자들의 면면을 살펴보면, 근래들어 태평양 전쟁을 소재로 삼은 작품들 - 로렐라이, 한여름의 오리온, 나는 당신을 위해 죽으러 갑니다 등 - 에서 주연이나 조연을 맡았던 배우들이 대거 기용되었다. 제작자도 우리에게는 극우 영화로 잘 알려진 "망국의 이지스(亡國のイ-ジス : 2004)"를 제작했던 프로듀서 고타키 쇼헤이(小滝祥平), 바로 그 사람이다.

한 남자가 버스에서 내려 히가시가오카 중학교 교문으로 들어간다. `베스트 프렌즈 운동`이라는 표어가 건물에 붙어 있고, 교내에 ‘파랑새 박스’라는 투서함이 설치되어 있는 히가시가오카 중학교. 남자는 2학년 1반의 임시교사 무라우치로 학생들은 심하게 말을 더듬는 그를 비웃는다. 자살미수 사건으로 지난 학기 전학 간 학생의 의자와 책상을 다시 교실로 옮겨온 무라우치는 주인 없는 그 자리에 인사를 한다. “노쿠치 군, 안녕!”

Based on a short story written by Shuhei Fujisawa (who also wrote Twilight Samurai, The Hidden Blade, Love and Honor), the film depicts the uneasy life of Noe Isomura (Rena Tanaka) with the difficult family she has married into after her former husband passed away. One day as she tries to brake off a branch of a cherry tree, she is aided by a samurai who she does not recognize but who recognizes her. He turns out to be a former suitor that she never met named Yaichiro Tezuka (Noriyuki Higashiyama) and who teaches swordsmanship to the local samurai. Meanwhile, the powerful new chief retainer of the village enacts land policies that threaten the survival of the local farmers.

On the first day of school for third-year junior high student Nakahara Sawako (Kitano Kie), her father (Haba Yuichi, Off Balance) announces that he is quitting his teaching position and absolving from all parental responsibilities. For Sawako, this is only the latest episode in her family's parade of problems. Three years ago her father attempted suicide, and since then, things haven't been quite the same, with her mother (Ishida Yuriko, Miracle in Four Days) moving out and her studious older brother (Hiaraoka Yuta, Be With You) giving up school. Amidst the family drama, Sawako finds her own balance, working hard in school and developing a romance with cheerful transfer student Oura (Katusji Ryo, Aegis).
