A young French woman returns to the vast silence of West Africa to contemplate her childhood days in a colonial outpost in Cameroon. Her strongest memories are of the family's houseboy, Protée — a man of great nobility, intelligence and beauty — and the intricate nature of relationships in a racist society.

Robert Avranche, a middle-aged, alcoholic garage owner, is sitting on a train, reflecting on the emptiness of his life. An attractive young woman, Donatienne, suddenly enters the compartment and offers to make love to him. Robert accepts but, when the woman leaves the train afterwards, he decides to follow her...

Marie is nineteen and bored in her little suburban life with no future. In a café, she meets the charismatic and beautiful Gerard. Blinded by adoration, Mary decides to leave her parents and her clerk job to live with the man she considers as the love of her life. But Gerard is a pimp, who soon forces her into prostitution. From within homes to out on the streets, the young woman gradually discovers a world of decay and violence.

French colonists in Africa, several months behind in the news, find themselves at war with their German neighbors. Deciding that they must do their proper duty and fight the Germans, they promptly conscript the local native population. Issuing them boots and rifles, the French attempt to make "proper" soldiers out of the Africans. A young, idealistic French geographer seems to be the only rational person in the town, and he takes over control of the "war" after several bungles on the part of the others.

In occupied France during the WWII, a German officer is murdered. The collaborationist Vichy government decides to pin the murder on six petty criminals. Loyal judges are called in to convict them as quickly as possible.

범죄의 세계에서 화려하게 명성을 날려온 보석 전문 강도이자 킬러 싸르테(아랑 드롱 분)가 호송 도중 자동차 바닥을 뚫고 탈출한다. 시실리계 거물 마피아 마네레제(장 가방 분)으로부터 5천만불에 달하는 보석을 가로채자는 제의를 받은 그는 탈출 직후 마네레제의 집에 기거하며 감방 동료로부터 얻어낸 보석 전시장 경보 시스탬을 하나하나 분석해 낸다. 그러나 현장 조사결과 도면에는 없던 특수장치가 발견되자 이들은 계획을 원점으로 돌리고 다시 치밀한 작전을 세운다.그사이 싸르테는 마네레제의 아들 알도의 아내와 사랑에 빠지고 만다. 한편 프랑스 경찰청의 국보급 수사관으로 싸르테검거에 총력을 시울리고 있는 르고프(리노 벤츄리 분)의 추적이 뒤따르는 가운데 싸르테 일행은 뉴욕 전시를 위해 공수되던 보석을 실은 여객기를 납치, 뉴욕의 프리웨이에 강제 착륙시키는데.

제1차 세계대전에서 영국군에 맞서 싸우던 독일군은 프랑스의 한 작은 마을에 폭발물을 심어둔다. 영국군이 도착하면 그 폭발물이 터져 마을이 쑥대밭이 되는 것이다. 이 소식을 들은 마을 사람들은 모두 도망을 갔다. 그런데 근처에 있는 한 정신병원 환자들은 병원 문이 열려 있는 걸 보고 처음엔 망설였지만, 이내 그들도 병원에서 탈출하여 마을로 향하게 된다. 영국군인 찰스는 폭발물 해체 임무를 맡고 이 마을에 도착한다. 그리고 장군, 헤어드레서, 광대, 매음굴 마담 복장을 한 정신병원 환자들이 마을을 장악한 것을 발견하게 된다. 정신병원에서 뛰쳐나온 그들은 찰스가 꿈꿔오던 삶을 살고 있는 듯 보였다. 그리고 그들은 찰스를 그들의 왕으로 맞이하였다. 찰스는 자신이 마법과도 같은 네버-네버랜드에 와있는 것이라고 생각한다. 그는 그 ‘미친’ 사람들의 친절함과 인간적인 모습에 감동을 받는다. 그리고 무시무시한 전쟁을 일으키고 있는 사람들이 그들보다 더 미친 사람들이라고 생각하기에 이른다. 또한 ‘코쿨리코’라는 아름다운 여성을 만나 사랑에 빠지게 된다.
