1968년 베트남전에 발발하자 해군인 밥(브루스 던)은 베트남을 향해 떠나고 그의 아내 샐리(제인 폰다)는 L.A.의 집에 혼자 남겨 진다. 샐리는 사랑하는 밥의 부재로 외로움을 느끼면서 무언가 보람을 찾고, 참전 군인의 아내로서 할 만한 일을 찾아 나선 후 재향군인 병원에서 간호 보조사로 봉사하게 된다. 샐리는 그곳에서 운명적으로 두 사람을 만나게 된다. 자신과 비슷한 처지에 있는 비(페넬로프 밀포드)와는 절친한 친구가 된다. 그리고 또 한사람, 샐리의 고등학교 동창이자 베트남전에서 부상을 입고 귀향한 루크(존 보이트). 고등학교때는 미식축구 였고, 여학생들에게 인기도 좋았던 루크는 베트남에서 입은 부상으로 하반신 불구가 되어 병원에 장기 입원하고 있었다. 더 이상 뛰는 건 커녕 일어설 수 조차 없는 처지가 된 루크는 비관적이고, 신경질적인 사람이 되어 있었지만 샐리는 그런 루크를 정성으로 돌보며 그의 마음을 다시 열려고 노력한다. 봉사 활동을 하면서 샐리는 점점 베트남전에 아무 명분도, 가치도 없는 무의미하고 허망한 전쟁임을 깨달아 가고, 루크는 샐리의 도움으로 다시 활기를 찾아 간다. 루크와 샐리 사이에는 하나둘 공감대가 형성되면서 급속도로 가까워 지고, 급기야는 잠자리까지 함께 하게 된다. 그무렵 밥이 경미한 부상을 입고 귀향한다. 샐리는 남편의 제대를 기뻐하면서도 죄책감을 느끼지만, 루크와의 사랑이 한순간의 충동적이 관계가 아닌 것을 알기 때문에 두 남자 사이에서 갈피를 잡지 못한다. 돌아온 밥은 전쟁 후유증으로 말수가 없어지고, 모든 것에 무관심한 사람이 되었는데 가다 샐리와 루크의 관계까지 알아 버려 더욱 움츠러 들게 된다. 루크는 의견을 같이 하는 병원 사람들, 환자들, 군인들과 반전 시위를 벌이며 더 이상 전쟁으로 인한 무의미한 희생이 커지는 것을 반대한다. 샐리는 밥의 변화를 걱정하면서 여전히 봉사 활동에 전념하지만 뜻하지 않은 불행을 만나게 된다.
