가진 것이라곤 몸뚱이 하나 뿐인 사이풀은 고향을 떠나 수도 다카에서 구급차를 운전한다. 매일같이 죽음을 목도하는 것보다 그를 더욱 힘들게 하는 것은 끝이 보이지 않는 가난의 함정이다. 그의 고향 마을은 계속 불어나는 강물로 땅이 꺼져가는 삼각주. 고향에 두고 온 두 번째 부인은 홀로 시부모와 두 아이를 보살피지만 경제적 능력이 없다. 중매결혼으로 맺어진 첫 번째 부인은 외국에 나가서 돈을 벌려 하지만 비행기 삯도 대줄 수 없는 가난한 남편을 원망한다. 두 부인을 책임지느라 느는 것은 빚 밖에 없고 그를 도와줄 사람은 아무도 없다. 이보다 더 나락으로 떨어질 수 없을 것 같은 상황에서 그는 점차 몸과 마음이 망가진다. 방글라데시의 모함마드 라비 므리다 감독의 <발 밑의 나락>은 가장 기본적인 사회안전망이 부재한 상태에서 기후변화로 인한 자연재해까지 겹쳐 극단으로 몰리는 인물을 그리고 있다.

Young photographer Khaleed Saikat once decided to go for a journey into the unknown. He took his laptop, camera, and some money with him. But no destination remains unknown at its end. Khaleed landed a small village market where he met the ‘Orao’ Youngman Arun Khalko and his constant companion Shukra.

The story of a lonely man who is caught in a perpetual cycle of time. He hangs in limbo, between reality and dreams. His only companions are a maid, a cat, and a grandfather clock. The same things are happening in his life and he becomes increasingly frustrated.
