어느날 밤, 집에서 쉬고 있던 옥스퍼드 대학의 교수 스티븐(더크 보가드 분)은 요란한 굉음에 놀라 밖으로 뛰어나간다. 굉음은 차사고에 의한 것이었고, 구겨진 차 안에는 자신이 가르치던 학생 둘이 타고 있었다. 윌리엄(마이클 요크 분)은 죽고 그의 약혼녀 애나는 쇼크상태에 빠져 있다. 스티븐은 애나를 집으로 데리고 들어와 경찰에 신고를 한다. 경찰이 조사를 끝내고 돌아간 뒤 스티븐은 윌리엄과 애나를 처음 만났던 때를 회상한다. 그리고 이야기는 플래시백과 단속적인 회상을 통해 전개된다. 런던에서 텔레비전 프로듀서와 옛 애인을 만나고 돌아온 스티븐은 자신의 집에서 동료교수인 찰리(스탠리 베이커 분)와 애나가 자고 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀란다. 찰리는 자신과 애나가 잠자리를 같이 했다고 고백하고, 찰리의 아내 로라도 이 사실을 알게 된다. 상심해있는 로라에게 스티븐은 한순간의 바람기일 뿐이라고 위로하지만 그렇게 간단하게 문제가 해결되지는 않는다. 애나는 스티븐에게 윌리엄과 결혼할 거라고 얘기하고 그 사실을 찰리에게 대신 전해달라고 부탁하고 떠난다. 그렇게 차 사고가 발생하고 옥스퍼드에 몸 담고 있는 여섯 사람의 감춰진 질투와 욕망들이 베일을 벗기 시작한다.

Gulley Jimson is a boorish aging artist recently released from prison. A swindler in search of his next art project, he hunkers down in the penthouse of would-be patrons the Beeders while they go on an extended vacation; he paints a mural on their wall, pawns their valuables and, along with the sculptor Abel, inadvertently smashes a large hole in their floor.
